You Can Live without This
Full of (mostly realistic-looking art), Batman: Damned seems to put the Caped Crusader on a spiritual journey following the death of the Joker. Based on the title, I think we’re suppose to envision Batman in a hell of his own making. It’s an interesting premise, but I didn’t like how events played out.(SPOILER ALERT:) Much of the narrative will seem familiar to fans of the character, yet there are some notable divergences from tradition. Wayne’s parents are in a failed marriage, and Thomas is cheating on Martha. I can accept that as hellish (it is certainly disturbing to read), but the affair doesn’t really impact the current level of the story. There is also some attempt to tie in DC’s various supernatural heroes in to the arc. Most seem to be treated well. However, there are very original representations of Etrigan (he’s looking incongruously human here) and (as revealed in the apparatus at the end) the Enchantress, who seems to be the cause of all the darkness surrounding the Waynes. Lastly, I have mixed feelings on the end. It’s not clear if Batman’s final choice changes history or if the events of the book were all fantasy. Either way, there are no real changes created here. We are simply returned to the status quo like any other arc.In closing, do be careful ordering this from Amazon. My copy arrived looking like it had been dropped at one point. The bottom corner at the spine was dented, and damage appeared internally.

Must read, and Amazon's terrible service
I've said it once and I'll say it again, amazon doesnt know how to ship books. The cheap packaging didnt save my book and completely ruined the dust jacket on my book! As for the book itself, it's a fantastic read and brian truly knocked it out of the park again.

Revolutionary Art and Story Telling. A New Bar Has Been Set.
After decades of goofiness and day-time pun-filled crime fighting, and years of PG mystery, we have finally received Batman as he was always meant to be written. The grit of this story and its art are almost revolutionary in what they mean for the future of Batman. While this isn't the first DC Black Label Batman (that would be Batman: White Knight), this sets a new bar in substance and quality. Batman's golden years were decent, but the black years have just begun, and if this is any indication of the direction Batman is going, there's no better time to be alive.

A damned good read
I see that this one is a little divisive in the fact that so much is left to interpretation. Without going into spoiler territory, this is best looked at as a character study on Bruce Wayne/Batman with some different elements than what we are used to. This is not a book to blast through, but it is one to look at the meaning behind the panels (believe me, it will be hard to speed through these extremely well drawn panels). Again this is not a book for everyone, but if you come into it with the right mindset you're in for a visual and prolific experience. I know that I would be happy to revisit it.As far as the actual product goes, this is a very wide book as far as comics go. If you're a collector like myself, be ready for that.

Extremely Good Story and Art
I read this in one sitting and was completely absorbed start to finish. The story is very enthralling, entertaining, thought provoking and brilliant. And as many have said, the art is amazingly good. This is a mystery story with supernatural elements, but it’s also a character study of Batman/Bruce Wayne and (unexpectedly) a retelling of his origin that is so good that I’d love to see it adopted and added to the mythology, at least in further stories in this new DC Black line. This new retelling adds twists that dramatically change the Batman character without contradicting anything previously told, and it would be really interesting to see these twists examined further. This can definitely be read as a stand alone story—and that’s what I thought it was through most of my reading—but it’s actually a direct sequel to the Joker graphic novel done by this same creative team a few years back; while Joker is a good book, the story, writing and art are all even better in this book—especially the art. The art in this book is some of the best I’ve seen, and it is consistent and beautiful the entire length of the book.To me, this book is up there with Year One and Dark Knight Returns as one of the best Batman stories ever. While the book has an end, it also has a setup for a volume three, and I’m already looking forward to it.

Dissapointing
Loved the art (most of the time), all the cameos, but I kept waiting for the plot to star unfolding, and I felt like nothing happened

Bruce in Wonderland
Awesome art work and a good concept but that is about it. Batman wakes up in in an back of a ambulance the the whole story goes to Wonderland from there.Batman learns the Joker is dead, the witness is a hobo who is not a hobo, and the Justice League Dark cast in completely different roles. I have no I death why. Also he is seeing visions that young family life was not as happy as we previously remembered.Constantine is annoying narrator/guide on Batmans journey.I have to say I have always hated horror stories, I did figure me liking Batman so much, would even the scales. Unfortunately it did not. I especially hate the ending. A great as the art work is I would not recommend this.

Gives and leaves nothing.
Except a all over the place head scratching continuation of Joker. I don't find it smart to leave the reader to figure out what is going on page to page. At end you kind of know but I want to know page to page, not wtf all the way then oh I THINK I get what was happening.Read if you enjoyed Joker but just so you have.Amazing art by Bermejo.

About Time.. Finally...
Utterly amazing the successful attempt to cross the supernatural with Bruce's impending and unending resolve to reconciliate the madness and cruel justice surrounding his life's circumstances.. I almost feel as if Bruce would find successful closure within himself given the darkness and the allure of supernatural involved so scandalously and copiously here because it seems to give THE ONLY answers to the prince's highly strung sense of distress and deeply hidden trauma.. I guess it would take this level of madness in order to truly pluck out the seeds of horror and terror lurking in Bruce's heart....Hats off to the writers balls in actually going toe to toe with this occultist approach.. The artwork... a SEMINAL PARADISE..

Story goes nowhere
First of all the artwork from Bermejo is an absolute master class and is among the best I've seen. The story is very hard to follow, it's very stop start and doesn't really go anywhere which is a common issue when dc adds magic to a batman story. I was hoping it would follow the same style in writing as "joker" as this is kind of a sequel to that amazing book but it's miles off, except for the last couple of pages.Still well worth a purchase for the artwork alone though!
