Making Shapes: A Pop-Up Book

Minimal shapes
I purchased this book for two reasons - James Diaz (I hadn't had any of his books in my collection yet) and the pop up shapes. It delivers on both counts. The reason I'm not overly impressed is the few in numbers: a triangle, a circle, a star, and a cube and then a collection at the end. BUT, it is a good introduction to geometry - 2D shapes and their volumetric 3D cousins. The 3D shapes are well constructed. I do like that two different methods of 3D spheres are in the book - a slice form and dissolving (I don't know the correct term, but it fits like a dissolving picture mechanical).I'm glad I have it in my collection, but it would not be first choice for WOW! pop up.

Was hoping for more.
The sahpaes are o.k. I think I was hoping for a little more substance. The students in my class only checked it out once from the library. I think there is better books on shapes out there.

Play to learn
Yet another interesting children's book by Tango Books of Britain, where shapes both 2 and 3 dimensional become playful objects and learning becomes play. However, with only 4 shapes represented and one of them being a polygon, the selection seems just a bit absurd. It is also an expensive item. The last double spread is a lovely pop up mix of three of these shapes, with the triangle simply remaining a 2 dimensional shape.
