Does this headset have 7.1 surround system ?

Hi, Short answer: Any pair of headphones can provide immersive surround sound for gaming or films, and the ones to choose are simply those which sound best for you. The ATH-G1 are stereo, featuring two great-sounding drivers and a headset microphone, and can accurately reproduce binaural surround sound. Longer answer: Any set of stereo headphones, such as the ATH-G1, can provide binaural surround sound - such as that by Dolby or Windows, which is featured in some way on the PC, PS4 and Xbox consoles. Most, if not all, major games released will feature a binaural audio option. In the area of surround sound with headphones, multi-driver headsets, such as those which include 4 or more speakers built-in, are arguably a gimmick and don't provide any more effective surround sound than a standard pair of headphones. Immersive surround sound only requires two speakers: left and right - one for each ear, of course. Formats such as Dolby Atmos or Windows Sonic allow filmmakers and game developers to create a realistic 3D audio space using binaural (two speakers) headphone technology. Some headphones, such as our ATH-G1WL, also include features which create a virtual "surround sound" from a standard stereo source, in the attempt to improve the directionality of sounds in video games. are these closed or open back?

I would say they're a closed-back headset. They completely cover my ears.

left driver sounds dull, and like its missing most of the high range after 2 weeks of moderate use. any idea why? (shoking build quality aside)

Sounds to me you got a potential dud driver caused by production error or something. However ensure that the unit you use it on has the sound properly configured, if you use a pc, check your realtek (or software from whatever sound chip is on your motherboard). They usually have an equilizer, check that the EQ is not messed up. If it's still like this I recommend a return and get a new one.
