Paying For Protection: Scotchgard Fabric and Upholstery Protector
I have used Scotchgard Fabric and Upholstery Protector for over 2 decades on my fabrics andthat has made them easier to keep clean.I have used this product mostly on coats, pillows and furniture. I will usually apply at least 2 thincoats of Scotchgard after cleaning my jackets or indoor fabrics. I found that it helps block moststains from permanently discoloring the fabric. I just plop the piece in the washer and the stainis usually gone. Reapply the Protector and I am good to go again.Obviously this product has its limitations especially with real greasy gritty oil; that comes from anautomobile, for instance. Oil-based products seem to soak in to the fabric more than the Scotch-gard can protect. What I found was that with the Scotchgard it protected most of the fabric butthere was a tell-tale sign of the substance left on the jacket.I have used this product on my wool, cotton and 'dry clean only' fabrics without any issues or anyproblems. As is suggested with any spray-on product first test a small portion of the fabric in anarea not usually seen, that you wish to protect. I have not used it on silk as of yet.Light liquids spills have been repelled and provided me with an easy blotting cleanup. If somethingdid appear to stain the fabric after cleanup it seemed to come out easily in the wash. I considerthis product a light protectorate against most non-oily substances. Don't expect it to block all nastysubstances that earth and man can throw at it. Yet, for most situations it works just terrific for me.If possible you should apply this product outside. The fumes can be overpowering when applyingeven to a small object. The smell can permeate two to three large rooms for up to an hour afterapplication so be careful with application sites. Garages are a good source, or a room that can beclosed off until the scent subsides but when possible there should be plenty of fresh air available.Because of the positive long term usage every year, for decades, of this product I gave it 5 stars.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Here are suggested usages as listed by manufacturer: 'Suit Jackets, Curtains, Shirts, Silk Ties,Fabric Sofas & Chairs, Dress & Pant Suits, Chair Cushions, Slip Covers, Caps, Blouses, ThrowPillows, and Table Linens.'

MISLEADING!! Not Fabric Protector, it’s Water Shield!!
This one star is for the misleading product picture. As others have pointed out, thank you, this product is no longer manufactured by 3M and if you try to order the fabric protector, its replaced with an inferior product Fabric Water Shield. The Fabric Protector(available in a red can for general fabrics, purple can for arts and craft fabrics and black can for automotive fabrics - but all the same product essentially as far as I could tell) is/was a FABULOUS and item saving product, speaking as someone with 4 dogs, 2 cats and 2 kids. I greatly recommended this product and avidly used it along with other scotchgard products on appropriate furniture, clothes, shoes, stuffed animals,(and more) fabrics for years. It was truly an item saver. I love the fabric and carpet cleaner and suede protectors as well. When I first tried the new Water Shield version, I immediately noticed the smell. I guess I had gotten used to the other product and with the windows open and after the fabric dried, the smell was gone. Unfortunately, after a week of spraying fabrics with the Water Shield product, everyone can STILL smell the spray, which I don’t want my family to be continuously exposed. Plus they hate the smell and won’t use/wear anything if it smells like it’s been sprayed. I hate this. As far as it being only a water shield it’s ok, but that’s not the only reason I bought it. I need the entire array of fabric protection magic.Currently, I am looking for alternative products that work as well as the original Fabric Protector product.

Spray
Been using this product for years. I spray my coats & shoes to protect them from the rain. Also, when I know that I am going out in the rain the next day, I spray my leg pants so that they do not get as wet.

works extremely well with small spills, but not that great with big spills
my dining chairs were super nasty looking and stained because of the many many times that my daughter has spilled on it. i've tried deep cleaning it, but it just couldn't make it look any better. i thought about plastic wrapping the chairs, but that's so hideous. so i decided to upholster my dining chairs, but this time i wanted to be proactive against potential spills so i did a lot of research and this had such great reviews i decided to try this. i sprayed my fabric once and then waited 2 hours before i sprayed it again. the smell is definitely strong (kinda like nail polish remover) and so i hung the fabric over my dining chairs and left it in my backyard overnight. in the morning, i decided to test it to see if it worked. i poured a little bit of water on the fabric and it was amazing! just a big water bead and we tilted the fabric back and forth and it just rolled along the fabric. i wiped it up and the fabric was barely wet. of course when my daughter also wanted to test it she poured way too much water on it. so while it still rolled off in a sense, the fabric itself was definitely wet so think this will eventually get stained in the long run. but for tiny small spills, i think it will definitely hold up well with this spray.
