Seymour Mfg. 30-525 Color Flame Crystals, 16 ounce

With a major Cub Scout campfire coming up, I started researching how to produce colored flame. The standard searches came up with a lot of references to the subject, and in no time I had a list of the chemicals I'd need to produce the various colors. Then I started searching for the chemicals I'd need. Most were available for purchase, but were not cheap. There was really no hassle to ordering a kilogram or more of some of these chemicals, but I was amazed--and put off--by what I thought were exorbitat prices.Then I typed "color flame" into Amazon.com and up came this stuff. Not having any experience with colored flame before, I purchased this product, along with Rainbow Flame Crystals for the Cub Scout campfire. Some modest prior experimentation in the charcoal grill at home showed that the stuff works just as advertised.At the campfire this product produced some very nice blue, green and every so often purple flame, which both the kids and the adults found very enjoyable (hint: don't tell them that you're using this stuff, especially the kids). The effects lingered for some time, about five minutes per heaping tablespoon of product. I found that a larger amount--maybe a half cup--was the best way to apply the product to a large fire.Also, it's better to sprinkle the product throughout the fire, rather than pour it in so it piles in a single location. Dispersing the crystals troughout the fire will create an instant and thorough color flame effect, while pouring will get you an instant effect in a single location, with a pile of crystals that becomes somewhat self-insulating. Once a log falls or you stir the coals, and that pile of crystals is disturbed you will get another burst of color, which actually is a pretty cool effect, giving you shots of color hours after you've applied the crystals.Once that big campfire was going, I simply tossed an entire package or two directly into the fire. Using the pour or sprinkle settings on top of the package (just like your home spice containers) isn't practical for a large fire, and as described above, the effect can be quite good.The best thing about this product is its price. Given what I'd discovered about ordering colored flame-producing chemicals, the price for this item, already prepared and ready to go, is simply outstanding. In fact, the low price had me buying more than one.Bottom line: This is a simple product which delivers exactly as promised. I've got more scout camping and campfires coming up this summer, and this product will figure prominently in those activities.

While something close to $10 seemed expensive for a small bit of fleeting entertainment, this was very much worth it. We used an entire package at one bonfire and learned quite a lot about it. All of the following may change depending on the size and heat of your fire.First, they are really fun. For everyone. We had a few kids at this bonfire between 12-14 and they loved it. We were definitely wary of letting them get too close to throw some on the fire, but they enjoyed both watching and trying to throw the crystals (metals) into the fire. Adults, as well, enjoyed the show.Second, the color didn't last for anywhere close to 5 minutes. 5 seconds may be more accurate. Every fire is different, and hotter fires (I would imagine) combust the material quicker so it may have just burned off very fast, but it was a tad disappointing. This brings us to....Third, it takes a lot of crystals to produce a result. Perhaps it was the heat of the fire or something else, but the sprinkle slot on the top of the container was utterly useless. It took the large opening to produce a result in the fire. Which is how we wound up using an entire package for one fire.While it was expensive, it was a fun novelty and certainly added to an otherwise dull fire. The kids got involved and entertained and the show was pretty good. Enjoy them!

colors are ok

Worked amazingly better than the smaller packets I have bought before from a different company.I put more in than suggested, we say colored flames here and there for the next hour atleast and when that slowed, I just dumped more and FWOOSH! full of nice colors for a bit and then random color shots for the next hour or so.I used it very liberally and we still have some extra after 3 days of using it.Loved it, did exactly as I was hoping it would. Wish there were more color choices :)

We dipped pinecones in wax and sprinkled the product on them. Next time we do it, it's going to be more product on them! They made beautiful fire starters.

These flame crystals are amazing! They are a must have for anyone who does campfires somewhat regularly or if you just want to impress your friends at a campout. The crystals produce an array of colors and it is really beautiful. We end up sitting around the fire much longer to chat while being mesmerized by the hypnotizing colors. Of note, you only add the crystals in the fire after you are done cooking food which is a great way to end the night. This can has lasted us a long time and we have quite a few campfires. I highly recommend this product.

This was horrible. The crystals came in a plastic bucket with no safety seal on the bucket. So by the time it got to my house the container had opened and there were color crystals all over the inside of the box. It made me wonder how many spilled out of the box in transit.Also, the product didn't work. I used BOTH buckets in my campfire over the weekend infront of 900 people and it didn't work. NO ONE saw the color or enjoyed the product. Complete waste of money, and I will not order from this seller again.

We bought this for camping just for fun to have colorful fire. Always get a lot of compliments.
