When you hit bottom, keep digging
This is, literally a "boat book" . Rokasaburo is a normal salaryman drone at a big Japanese conglomerate. He gets involved in some shady dealings for his company and is thrown away like a used tissue. He takes up a new job with the East Asian Pirates who kidnapped him and proceeds to go native. A collection of short stories, with no discernible plot, but excellent characterization and artwork.

Fun, engaging, captivating
I love Revy's personality, super funny to add with the diverse group of the ship. I recommend this to anyone who likes action, with a little bit of comedy, and a little bit of sadness. Currently reading Volume 2, and soon to start 3.

I watched the anime and was sad, when I found there was more to the story. So I ended up buying the manga.I’m really surprised I didn’t start with the manga it covers a lot from the anime that was shown. I highly recommend it. The book is build to last to be honest

Revy is Best Girl!
Black Lagoon was the first anime I ever purchased and it still ranks as one of my favorite. Naturally I had to have the manga, too, right? This series is packed full of action and I love the whole "under" world Mr. Hiroe created in Roanapur. And the characters? The headline says it all. Rock, Dutch, Balalaika, Chang, Eda, and the rest are all interesting and well...badass. Highly, highly recommend the read for the action junkies out there.

I absolutely love this manga and now I have the first volume
I absolutely love this manga and now I have the first volume. The artwork is simply gorgeous which is almost ironic in a way because of how violent and gory this manga has been known to get in terms of the situations and actions some of the characters choose to take, but it can still be surprisingly funny. I saw the anime first before I read this manga, but it is literally taken straight from the beautiful drawings. I love this and I recommend this to anyone who wants a deep morality questioning piece of art that even in its darkest moments still has the ability to make you laugh in the next moments.

Rei Hiroe is the John Woo of Manga!
Black Lagoon is a brilliant but mature action-packed crime story told with all of the style of a classic John Woo film, and is my personal favorite manga (and anime). The author, Rei Hiroe, describes his action as a "bullet ballet" as made famous John Woo, and his character Mr Chang - the Triad boss, is almost certainly inspired by Chow Yun Fat's character Mark Lee from John Woo's "A Better Tomorrow".The series follows a small band of smugglers operating out of the fictitious city of Roanapur in Thailand, which has become somewhat of a gangsters paradise unofficially run by the before mentioned Mr Chang. Black Lagoon has some brilliant story arcs with complex plots, unexpected twists and high octane action but the series really stands out for its exceptional cast. Pretty much all of the characters in the series, major or minor are well written and given detailed personalities, motives and secrets so don't expect to find any generic one dimensional bad guys or damsels in distress, rather you will find characters that feel alive (or at least they start out that way!).The art of Black Lagoon is not as strong as the story, it's not to say it's bad in any way it's just very average when compared to Rei Hiroe's own art books. The characters have a natural look and even the female characters have realistic proportions and are not overly sexualised. The Manga (up to Volume 9) is the same as the anime series 1, 2 and the Roberta's Blood Trail OVA, so if you've already seen the anime then you won't find any new material in the manga until volume 10. I highly recommend this series to adult readers who like action and are looking for a deep story, but be aware that it does get very dark in places and touches on some taboo/sensitive subjects occasionally so you might want to do a bit more research if you are easily offended. A final warning before committing to this series is that the author is extremely slow at getting volumes finished and released so be prepared to wait literally years between volumes, it's worth the wait though as I've loved every one so far!

This Manga Means Business
When the first panel you see in a graphic novel is some guy getting his face punched in, you know it means business. We're introduced to Rokuro 'Rock' Okajima as he's kidnapped by a band of pirates who later become his companions: Revy, Dutch, and Benny. Thus begins the struggle of a regular Japanese businessman as he tries to hold onto his morals and beliefs as he's thrust into a world of corruption, violence, and greed. While I don't want to give too much away, I will mention that throughout this first graphic novel the crew of the Black Lagoon (an old WWII torpedo boat) deal with mercenaries, corrupt businessmen, other pirates-for-hire, and a crazy ex-revolutionary maid who's trying to save the kidnapped son of a wealthy family--who just happens to be their cargo. The art is very detailed and fun to look at and the action sequences flow quite nicely. Characters are likeable enough and the manga has its genuinely funny moments. All in all, ***** out of *****
