Perfect filter / Read my review for a pro-tip/time saving hack on cleaning filter.
Late June 2020: This is our second purchase of this filter. We purchased our first filter around September 2019. The filter is fantastic. Does a great job. Easy to clean. GREAT PRICE. We live in South Florida. Have a yard that's basically a jungle. No screen on our pool. Our pool gets really dirty. This filter continually (with weekly/bi-weekly cleaning) got the pool sparkling clean and clear. Cleaning the filter takes between 5-15 minutes to clean depending on your hose nozzle. Yes, the nozzle. If you use your traditional spray-gun nozzle, like I did for the first six months, its going to take you 15 minutes to clean the filter. No big deal. However, if you want cleaning to take around five minutes, here's a secret; head over to Ace Hardware and grab a (google it) "Ace 1 pattern Jet Stream Plastic Hose Nozzle" which costs $1.99. I found it while I was standing in line at Ace one day and bought it off impulse. It was cheap and seemed like it would be a good thing to raise the pressure. The nozzle is a plastic piece that screws on the top of your hose and resembles a smaller version of the top of a red ketchup squeeze bottle. WOW. This nozzle basically turns your hose into a instant pressure washer. Using this nozzle, knocked cleaning down to about five minutes. It was almost like the nozzle complimented the filter perfectly. TWO POINTS OF CAUTION: 1. If you have a power washer, I wouldn't use it on this filter. I really believe that using that kind of pressure would damage the filter and shorten it's life. I don't care what anyone says including the manufacturer. 2. DO NOT USE A POOL CLARIFIER TABLET WITH THIS FILTER. Our local family-owned pool store sold us a MiraClear Pool Water Clarifier (Google it to see what it is...it looks like a blue scallop shell) on a visit to pick up cholorine thinking it would be helpful to our foggy water issue we had for about a week. We purchased it, read the directions, followed the directions to a tell, and put it in the pool. We had high hopes, did a few hours of yard work, and returned back to find a still cloudy pool (the Miraclear product promised turning cloudy water into clear water within a matter of a few hours.) Instead, we found the pressure of the inlet nozzles (the filter jets in the pool) to be dramatically decreased; the flow of water was DRAMATICALLY decreased. We checked the filter basket...a few leaves. We jumped in and checked the jets...all fine. We turned the filter off and took the filter out...as we pulled the filter out, a long trail of three foot gooey, clear mucus looking gel pulled up with the filter. You can imagine the kind of thoughts going through my head and the kind of language coming out of my mouth. When the clarifier tablet was put in the pool it turned into a gooey gel-like substance which TOTALLY clogged the filter up with the gel like substance. The gooey gel sits on top of the filter like a slimy membrane. It was totally disgusting and nothing short of a total mess. Cleaning the filter with a hose and the red Ace nozzle i mentioned above didn't remove the goo at all and if that didn't remove it, I can assure you nothing would. After several attempts of hosing the filter off, I thought maybe a grease-cutting dish soap would cut the goo. It was a last resort before we caved in and bought another filter. It took about a hour of intense scrubbing, in the endless amount of creases, with 3/4 of a large bottle of blue Dawn dish soap to cut the goo and get rid of "most" of it (I still think some remained and really impacted the efficacy of the filter). In retrospect, I would have bought a new filter instead of cleaning it but once I started on that little project, I just couldn't give up. You know what I mean? I told our pool store what happened and they stopped selling the product immediately. I also send a short letter to Miraclear about what their product did to our filter, hoping I would hear from someone to at least apologize, if not give some kind of compensation for marketing a product that is total garbage. I never heard anything back, which wasn't at all a shock. It just confirmed that the maker of the product knows exactly what they are selling. Very frustrating. What I've learned and would do differently with this filter: 1. I would probably now purchase this filter once every six months. Not because its performance is diminished, remember, we had our first filter for a entire year without any problems (minus the water clarifier gooey nightmare) but simply because the price is so cheap for the filter. If the price stays around $50 for the filter, I've be buying a new one every six months. FINAL VERDICT: If you are on the fence about purchasing, I'm here to tell you that this filter has been better than any filter we've ever used. The quality is there, the performance is there, and the longevity is there. Buy the right nozzle for your hose for cleaning (the red Ace nozzle) and STAY AWAY from any water clarifier tablet and you'll be just fine. ANOTHER REASON TO BUY
