Poetry 101: From Shakespeare and Rupi Kaur to Iambic Pentameter and Blank Verse, Everything You Need to Know about Poetry (Adams 101 Series)

Though I spent four years as an English major, poetry somehow has never been a form of writing I have spent much time with nor have felt the loss thereof. In fact, having been born on International Bad Poetry Day— August 18 (it’s a thing, apparently)— I suppose you could say the stars have aligned to keep me from the poetical arts. However, one can not appear too ignorant, and that is where this delightful book comes in. Dalzell takes the reader whipstitch from the Greeks and the Romans through to Rupi Kaur (whom, if you don’t know, apparently has 2.6 million followers on Instagram), all in the space of 250 or so pages. The book is an easy, fun read with enough meat on the bones to make me maybe even think about reading some actual poety.

I find the information impressive and some of it is hard to find anywhere else.I would have liked more examples of different kinds of poetry; after all, I boughtthe book to learn how to write my own poetry. This is more biography and lessdo it yourself.

Seems like an awesome book but not for me. It is very detail and goes into depth on poetry types. It was more advance than what I needed so I had to return it and get another book that was more of what I was looking for 😁

I thought this book would be more about technique and style, and while that is covered briefly in the first 18 pages of the book, it's mostly a history lesson about famous poets, their award winning works and contributions to society. If you are looking for a how to, I'd recommend The Poetry Home Repair Manual by Ted Kooser.

The author managed to explain huge concepts very easily :) It’s a textbook basically not much else to say but it was decent.

(shows us the evolution of poetry from the Old English to the modern period.) Covers some major poets works as we move through it. It doesn't go into their work in detail but gives us the main idea of what we need to know about their works. It's precise and to the point, would recommend it for people who're looking for a guide to understanding poetry at a basic level, to clear entrances or something.
