AC Working Again!
My Trane heat pump's compressor would fail to start... Called HVAC service and they installed a Chinese made $10 jump start capacitor booster to get it up and running. Service call+diagnosis+JUNK booster was over $300 and it still took 15-20 cycles before the compressor would eventually kick on. I bought this to replace the OEM start capacitor that had gone bad and now the system is working perfectly again. I pulled that junk booster off the run capacitor and have saved it for when/if I have another issue. Bottom line, 90% of HVAC calls on outdoor units that cost $100's of dollars involve just replacing the run capacitor that costs about $10-$15 or the start capacitor that costs about $40-$70. Note: The start capacitor usually has quite a long life and mine finally failed after 14 years. It is usually the smaller and cheaper run capacitor that fails first. If you are DIY'er keep one of each on hand as cheap insurance compared to calling HVAC service. If your outdoor unit kicks on and only the fan comes on while the compressor tries to start over and over and over again THAT IS A BAD CAPICITOR and 90% of the time you can fix the problem yourself if you have replacements on hand.
