This movie was really shocking to me. Basically it is the tale of two working girls in Spain. You live the world of being a hooker through the eyes of the Spanish girl who befriends another girl from the Dominican Republic who is living in Spain illegally to support her son back in the DR. I won't reveal the story but it is in many ways a very realistic, but tragic look into the lives of women who support themselves through sexual acts with men.

Fernando Leon De Aranoa , director of the critically aclaimed " Mondays In The Sun " , is also the man behind such gems like " Barrio " and " Familia " ( one of the trickiest , little films about family you'll ever get the chance to see) . His latest offering " Princesas " is another slice-of-life film experience , strongly empowered by it's two charismatic leads , Candela Pena and Micaela Nevarez .Caye ( Pena ) is a prostitute working on the streets of Madrid . Seemingly unapologetic about the reasons that led her to this profession , she's a pessimistic creature , weary and doubtful about her chances of happiness . Best time of the day is with other fellow collegues hanging out at a beauty salon a friend owns . Worst time of the day ( or week or month...) is at the family dinner with her mother and brother with whom she has no real communication to speak of . Zulema is a dominican statuesque beauty working too on the streets of the spanish capital , with no papers to feel any security for herself . She has a little boy back in home to whom she sends most of the money that she earns .Aranoa choses an earthy , unpolished aproach to his material . The girls' grim reality is something the director doesn't shy away from . Still , there is a sweetness in the film - life is a bittersweet mystery afterall . Candela Pena has been a key supporting figure in many great spanish films during the last decade . Here , in one of her few leading roles , she's exceptional , her traumatised gaze displaying all the vulnerability and compation of her struggling character . Along with graceful newcomer Nevarez ,they create one of most believable pair of friends ive ever seen on screen . Finally , special credit must be given to Manu Chao's music colouring the film - his songs about all the poor lost souls of this earth meet a perfect match with this movie's social sensibilities.

I remember when I first saw this movie on TV. I usually don't watch shows entirely in Spanish but I was intrigued from the beginning and continued to be curious as the events played out. This could only be done by masterful storytelling and great directing. The characters are great, the acting, and cinematography are on point. I thoroughly appreciated the show and the messages it sent. I was surprised to discover that this movie was so difficult to find but that's only because it was tarnished by Harvey Weinstein's name vs the themes in the content. I consider myself lucky to acquire a copy.

Solid drama about female outsiders in Spain. Solid acting. The DVD is solid too, not a super great picture or sound, but not bad either. IFC is reliable but it's not Blu-Ray quality. Still a good company to locate hard-to-find titles that are worthwhile.

We selected this movie for our book/ movie club and everyone enjoyed it. It is essentially about a relationship that forms between a middle class born Spanish prostitute, Caye, and a poor Dominican prositute on the streets of Spain, Zulme. Although we never fully understand the reason Caye enters the trade we get to see her familial life and true desire to live a "normal life". Zulme's goal is also framed within her familial life, where she is working to send money home and bring her son. This movie isn't about prositution- that's just the background context- but it is about women struggling to survive for very different reasons and how they come together in the most stressful circumstances.

This is a profoundly beautiful movie. It is also a profoundly sad one.While the plot dips a bit too much into the realm of melodrama, the film is a must see for both the incredible performance given by Candela Pena as Caye and the directing (and writing) of Leon de Aranoa. The script is at times comic and often melancholic; the direction is steady throughout. Nevarez, here in her debut performance, cannot be overlooked and her chemistry with Pena genuinely sells their relationship. The film is also impressive musically-- from the infectious pop of Manu Chao (just try to get "Cinco Razones" out of your head after watching this) to the atmospheric and haunting score by Alfonso de Vilallonga.Highly recommended.

This was a good movie about friendship and having to deal with the hardships of life. The whole movie is in Spanish, but the subtitles aren't distracting. The product was in good condition and it arrived on time.

I just happened over this movie while browsing for other Spanish titles to purchase. I had never heard of princesas, but thought I'd give it a try. SO glad I did! This movie is great, and is now in my library as one of my favorites. If you're into indie films, you'll like this. If you're into Latin American/Spanish film or directing, you'll really like this. If you like indie Spanish cinema verite, you'll LOVE this movie.P.S. Great soundtrack throughout the movie that I can't get out of my head.

"PRINCESAS- es hat etwas gedauert, doch dann, plötzlich, hat mich der Film emotional so überwältigt, dass mirkleine Tränchen in den Augenwinkeln standen. Der " Job " von Caye und Zulema ist trostlos, lieblos. Und zermürbend." Der Typ ist ein Schwein, verstehst du,..........der würde dir alles versprechen. Bitte geh` da nicht hin.........! " -" Was glaubst du? Dass ich das nicht weiß? Ich bin es, die die Prügel bezieht! " - " Aber es kann doch nicht sein,dass der dich windelweich schlägt- und beim ersten Anruf rennst du wieder hin,...und holst dir nochmal Prügel ab!Dein Sohn braucht dich, ja. Aber eine Mutter ohne Papiere ist besser als eine tote Mutter! " - " Mir musst du nicht erzählen,was mein Sohn braucht. Davon hast du nicht die leiseste Ahnung.........! "Die geilen, lüsternden Blicke der Freier, die blöde Anmache von Menschen, die Zulemas Situation ausnutzen- abartig und ekelhaft." Du allein. So war` s abgemacht. Doch..........PRINCESAS ist trotz seiner mitunter tragischen Szenen ein erstaunlich hoffnungsvoller Film.Der spanische Regisseur Fernando Leon de Aranoa wagt sich in das aufgeladene Spannungsfeld zwischen Märchenkitsch und Realismus des Rotlichtmilieus. Er konzentriert die Handlung auf nur wenige wiederkehrende Schauplätze:Die Wohnungen der beiden Frauen, der Friseurladen, das Stamm- Cafe, der triste Straßenstrich.Wie diese Zwei Frauen ihr Leben zwischen diesen Orten aufgeteilt haben, während sie in Gedanken den eigenen Sehnsüchtenhinterherrennen, wiedersetzt sich in seiner Eintönigkeit und Bamalität dem schillernden " Pretty Woman " - Universum.Caye aus gut behütetem bürgerlichen Elternhaus,- und Zulema, die illegale Rechtlose. „Princesas“ ( dt. Titel „ Prinzessinnen der Strasse“ ) ist ein aussergewöhnlicher spanischer Spielfilm von Fernando León de Aranoa aus dem Jahr 2005.Ein Film über das Rotlicht-Milieu in Madrid , ohne jegliche Klischees.Die knapp 30-jährige Caye (Candela Peña) geht auf den Strassenstrich, stammt aus bürgerlichen Verhältnissen, ihre Familie weiss allerdings nichts von ihrer Geheimidentität. Der Zufall führt Caye mit der dominikanischen Prostituierten Zulema (Micaela Nevárez) zusammen. Die lässt sich von einem schmierigen Beamten (Antonio "Morris" Duran) benutzen und schlagen, in der Hoffnung, er würde ihr endlich die überlebenswichtigen Aufenthaltspapiere organisieren. Ihren Liebeslohn schickt sie in die alte Heimat, an ihren fünfjährigen Sohn. Caye nimmt sich Zulema an und wird so etwas wie ihr Schutzengel.Caye und Zulema leben in einer Welt, in der nicht viel Platz für Träume ist. Als Prostituierte arbeiten sie beide auf den Straßen von Madrid und versuchen nichts weiter, als über die Runden zu kommen. Und obwohl die beiden sehr unterschiedlichen Frauen in ihrem Kampf ums Geld und ums alltägliche Überleben eigentlich Konkurrentinnen sind, stellen sie doch bald fest, wie viel sie gemeinsam haben. Sie beide balancieren auf demselben schmalen Grat und finden schließlich in ihrer gemeinsamen Freundschaft neue Kraft, sorgen und helfen sich in ihrem manchmal sogar gefährlichen, oft unschönen Berufsalltag.Sie träumen von den gleichen Dingen...Der Film kommt völlig ungeschminkt daher, beschönigt nichts und wartet auch mal mit nackten Tatsachen auf. „Princesas“ ist aber keine Sekunde voyeuristisch, sondern gibt sehr einfühlsam Einblicke in einen harten Job. Die Dialoge sind sehr stark. Aber es gibt sogar zwischendurch auch etwas zum Schmunzeln. Vor allem in den Szenen im Friseursalon, wo sich die spanischen Prostituierten regelmässig zum Tratschen treffen. Ganz beiläufig geht es da um die neuesten Brustgrößentrends, die hochrangige, politische Klientel oder Schlüsselreize bei Freiern . Von dort aus haben sie auch einen guten Blick auf den Park, in dem sich plötzlich immer häufiger illegale Immigrantinnen aufhalten und ihre Dienste zu Discountpreisen anbieten. Das missfällt den Spanierinnen natürlich und sie versuchen, die Damen dort weg zu bekommen.Princesas ist mit viel Sorgfalt und Liebe zum Detail erzählt, mit bissig ironischem Unterton angesichts der sozialen Misere, pendelt stets zwischen leichtem Erzählton und der keineswegs immer lustigen Geschichte, die von einem temperament- und kraftvollen Soundtrack begleitet wird.In diesen 113 Minuten bleibt der Film immer empathisch und parteiisch gegenüber seinen beiden glänzend gespielten Protagonistinnen, lässt ihnen die Würde die sie verdient haben, in diesem würdelosen Geschäft.Alles wirkt authentisch. Nichts wird verherrlicht, zensiert, sondern schonungslos offen gelegt. Doch ohne auf Mitleid der Zuschauer aus zu sein. Der Film erzählt einfach seine Geschichte und man kann voll und ganz darauf eingehen und mitfühlen.„Princesas“ ist warmherzig und melancholisch, fällt keine moralischen Urteile, ist auch kein aufklärender Problemfilm, sondern ein sehr ehrlicher Film und sehr sehenswert.

This is a story of two women who are working on the street as wholes. So is it an erotic movie? Hell no. I don't review for erotic movies.The movie bearly show nudity and that is not these two women but other women on the street naked to seduce people in the car.The story is surprisingly amusing to watch. The director knew how to make the audience make these two charactor really lovable.There is no way not to.One woman has a family, a decent one, mother, father, sister and a brother. She just happenes to begin this business by an accident and she keep saying that it is temporary thing.The other woman has a child back in her country and need money to send to her mother for her child. She is really beautiful and in a great shape. I don't know why she is doing this job. She could have worked as a model or something. She has trouble having a work permit and constantly has to have sex with this guy, I think he is a lawyer, who do the paperwork for her illegally. Sometimes he even bit her brutally. He is a jerk.One day when this beautiful woman had a test and found out that she has AIDS, first thing she did was to meet that lawyer guy and had sex again. That was the revange. She wanted him to have AIDS too.Then she finally goes back to her home country.The main charactor on the other hand happens to meets this nice man and they become good mates. From time to time there were dagerous moments. Some guys saw her and found out that she is a street girl and approach her even though she was with her boyfriend.She had to go with the guy to have a blowjob to avoid from loosing her boyfriend.It was not easy for her to continue her job and continue her relationship with that nice man. But that man was so good to her.When her friend happens to leave the country, she tells her whole family about what she've done so far. Her family were of course very surprised.I think she will finally quie and find a new life.Some say everyone needs a second chance and I think these two women need one too.This movie was very convincing to make these two women to be lovable.The woman who has decent family even gave all the money to the woman who got AIDS when she goes back to her. That was a beautiful moment for me. Before, she constantly told her that that money was for her breast magnification. She always envied her friend's big breasts.Candela Peña was the actress who acted as who got the decent family and Micaela Nevárez was the beautiful actress who acted as the one who got AIDS. They both are quie aged. Theya are both born in 1972. But they truely looked way younger even though the movie was made back in 2005.

There is superb acting from all the cast in Princesses and especially so from the two leading actresses in the film – Candela Peña and Micaela Nevárez. The directing is good, as is the plot, the music, the editing and indeed all about this film with the possible exception of the hand-held camera work.The plot is plausible and intelligent. There is no gratuitous use of sex or violence in the film but sex and sometimes violence is portrayed and the film puts across the life of the prostitutes in Princesses very convincingly.This really is a very good film, and if like me you dislike deliberately shaken cameras, you might think twice about watching it, but actually I would recommend this film anyway as everything else about the film is very good.Princesses was nominated for numerous awards and won awards for Best Actress (Candela Peña) and Best New Actress (Micaela Nevárez) Best Original Song (Manu Chao) at the Goya’s.
