Great Book
This book does a great job of allowing kids (and adults) to learn how treasure hunters find sunken treasure in real life, in a way that preserves the “magical” aspect of the concept. Great drawings, easy to understand content, based on the story of the famous sunken Spanish ship (with its ill-gotten gains from South America). The book allowed our family to get some fun background before our trip to Key West and would work whether your travels are to any other place w treasure museums, shipwrecks, or simply wish to read about sunken treasure from your child’s bedside. The author is a noted writer and illustrator who researches the many kid books she writes. She draws her own illustrations and they are enjoyable to view. My 8-yr old daughter and us grown-ups loved the book.

Real life treasure hunting
Love this book that describes how treasure hunters discovered one of the largest treasures ever found, the treasures of the Atocha. This Spanish galleon sank off the coast of Florida in the.1500s. Used this in my classroom and the students loved it. Also details other famous sunken ships. Excellent book! .

Will ship from everywhere and take longer than expected.
I ordered around 80+ of these since they are in my schools reading curriculum. However, they all came from different sources. I would get a book here and then five from another place until finally they all arrived. It took almost 2 months for them to all show up. But they did! The book was exactly as we wanted and the quality of book was great.

A lifetime of imagination and inspiration in this book!
Bought this book for my son many many years ago, and it was his favorite book--I had to read it to him every night. It inspired his love of everything to do with the sea. Took him to the Mel Fisher Atocha museum in Key West and he got to touch one of the gold bars. Still a highlight of his life, he says! Now fast forward, I bought this for my granddaughter who will be visiting us in Key West, and wanted her to have the same awed experience of the treasure hunters! She loved it too! I don't think the blurb for the book said so, but on the book itself it claimed a 4th grade reading level, if that is important to you. I bought it used, but it was just fine. Great memories, more to come!

Minus two stars for promoting grave desecration
Although this book mostly glorifies the raping of the Spanish treasure ship Atocha by underwater grave robber Mel Fisher who destroyed a coral reef to get at the Atocha's treasures and who then committed the ultimate sin of archaeology by selling these priceless historical artifacts and treasures from this underwater grave that were originally paid for with the blood of MILLIONS of Central and South American Natives and was on its way to feed the satanically barbaric bloodlust of the Spanish Inquisition - Gibbons however does a good job demonstrating different ways of diving on underwater shipwrecks. She does mention underwater explorer Barry Clifford's discovery and recovery of the Whydah Galley (the world's only fully authenticated pirate shipwreck - which is 100% protected, preserved and UNSOLD by Clifford), and I dare say she would have done better to devote the book to that.

Plenty of technical terms and advanced vocabulary and he loved it. Works for a child who is 5
I thought maybe this might be a little juvenile for my 10 year old son, but it was not. Plenty of technical terms and advanced vocabulary and he loved it. Works for a child who is 5, as well, because the pictures are captivating.
