Omega (Haitian Edition)

There are a wide range of themes expressed in this excellent book of poetry. What touched me most was the sensitivity sincerely expressed on each page of the book. Many well written poems bring the readers attention to situations of social injustice, inequality and the human suffering caused by it; examples include Bòtpipòl, Brasewòs, Katrina and many others. The final section of the book consists of Haitian proverbs that are cleverly arranged so that the final word in one proverb is the first word in the next; this is delightful to read and a great way to learn Haitian proverbs. It is truly a gift to have quality poems such as these written in Haitian Creole. I wholeheartedly recommend that you read and enjoy this wonderful collection of poetry. Li liv sa; jwi liv sa!

Omega is a passionate, heartfelt collection of poems that delves deep into the struggles, joys, tears, and longings of the soul of the Haitian people. In the short pages of Omega Jacques Pierre makes his reader smile, cry, and question the status quo in Haiti and elsewhere. With each poem, I found myself in awe of the power that Pierre was able to fit into so few words. The reader quickly gains a sense of the level of intention and thoughtfulness behind every single word in this book. This is the masterful finesse that makes Omega so unique and a true must read.In addition the literary artistry in Omega, it is also a very important, much-awaited work due he scarcity of texts written in Haitian Kreyol. There are certainly even fewer academic-level works written in Kreyol. For Kreyol speakers, this book is very dear to our hearts, both for what it does for the language and with the language. Bravo!As a linguist, I also have to mention one of my favorite Omega poems, Babel. I love how it highlights the many roles of language and challenges popular views on language choice and code-switching.

Je suis ravi d'avoir acheté ce livre. Omega me donne l’impression d’être tombé sur un petit chef-d’œuvre. En le lisant, vous avez le sentiment d’être en plaine randonnée dans une des principales villes et/ou villages d’Haïti. « Lang nan Lang » me rappelle ce qui se passe au quotidien dans l’administration publique haïtienne. «Bèlte Lakay», un hommage sans folklore aux femmes lakay. Leur courage, la beauté de leur charactère et leur douceur ne pouvaient mieux être glosés. Jacques Pierre n’a pas été muet sur ce qui se passe dans la diaspora haïtienne. Allez! Appréciez «Lavimigran»! Découvrez vs mêmes ce petit joyau que Jacques nous a offert «epi kòl mwen bak»!

Mr. Jacques Pierre collection of poems and poetry are creative and brilliant. The power of Kreyol as a Romance language is well depicted through his writing and will be felt for generations to come. As a reader I was left mesmerized. Very much looking forward to the next.

Through Omega, Jacques Pierre has dispelled the widely held and misguided notion in some communities that Haitian Creole is not a full-fledged language. The poems take us on a journey through life in Haiti in its cultural, political, and social aspects. In this book, the author pays tribute to our forefathers such as Dessalines, Toussaint, Jacques Roumain and Jacques Stephen Alexis, and Nemours Jean Baptiste... The language is powerful. The poems are a mix of prose and poetry. The proverbs are thought-provoking. Omega is a powerful tool that contributes to preserve our precious Haitian folklore. Chapo ba pou Jacques Pierre. I truly appreciate his commend of the creole language as well as his sincerity and his truthfulness about his depiction of Haiti, its people and its culture. Often when people hear the name Haiti from the media, the first thing that comes to their mind is poverty. However, in "Omega" Jacques showed us the positive side of Haiti.Also,Jacques, in the poem "Babel" advocates for the linguistic rights of everyone around the world. The book contains different poems made of wonderful proverbs that display the richness of Haitian culture and the beauty of the language. Anyone who is interested in Haiti's culture must get a copy of this book.
