Hello - This device can only detect authentic diamonds (loud beep, beep, beep) or metals (fast buzzing beeps). Keep in mind that you MUST allow the "lamp" to power up and you MUST be holding the item with your fingers. This device will not determine genuine gemstones (i.e. rubies or sapphires) nor distinctions in metals (i.e. gold, silver or steel). So it will not determine if rubies, sapphires or turquoise are real. The only true way to do that is through a reputable jeweler. They have devices (light refractors) and experience to make those determinations but it may cost you for them to provide that information. I hope this helps.

Q: What is the difference between the black and multicolored tool?

The difference would be what the tool is capable of measuring. It measures the hardness of the stone. If a real diamond, it will light up and beep. Precious stone light it up in the mid area range.

It does the job.

Pro's: I tested my vintage & Antique jewelry and if you're patient & have a steady hand it works great.Cons: Difficult with tiny stones. If the tester touches metal it will buzz and is hard to test tiny stones. Also, there are NO instructions for testing results for other than diamond testing. I looked through other sales and found one seller that gave good info for what results to expect from other precious stone testing. This seller should include this info in their ads. I was a bit regretful at not having purchased from the other seller because of the good info and for the same price I would have gotten a 60x magnifier. All in all though, this tester does the job and i do recommend it.

Disappointed, not as described, not accurate

This does not work as described. It is not able to detect other gemstones, such as rubies, sapphires, amethyst, etc. It did detect my diamond, but it also appeared to think my cubic zirconia ($30 from Walmart, definitely not a diamond) was a diamond, as well.

This device test for conductivity. Diamond, Moissanite and Sapphire has a high conductivity rating. "Diamond being the highest followed by Moissanite. You can use this device to test for that in the above mentioned gem stones.
