Man, are these people dumb!!!
The one star reviews are right on the money with how ridiculous this book is, but for the most part I enjoyed feeling superior and laughing my butt off. About the third time the dad turned his back on the bad guys and got beat up yet again, I decided these folks were too dumb to live. The proper ending would have been Darwinian selection where they all bite it. Who goes out into the dark woods setting warning trip wires of JINGLE BELLS on fishing line and then goes inside, barricades the door and puts on a loud movie? Lol, how are you going to hear those jingle bells? If that guy was a Navy Seal, we are in trouble. He was nicked on the shoulder by a .22, fell down and passed out for 6 hours. Then he spends two days with the couple who bandaged him up because they seem nervous. WTF? You have no idea where your family is, if they are even alive, someone is bombing the US and you stops mid-journey to find your family, to hang out and rave about the woman's cooking? Almost all of the misfortune that happens to his family is because they ignored his prepper advice. Over and over, they think about what the protocol is and then do what ever they want. It always ends badly, but that does not stop them from f'ing it up again. It's like the author couldn't think of any actual scenarios so he just made them all dumb AF. About halfway through, it stopped being funny and became aggravating. DNF. Four stars because seeing this might save someone's time. Bug out now!!!

WHY is every character so clumsy and constantly falling over their feet?
All kidding aside, it seems that virtually every character in this genre of books are unable to stay upright when the least bit of adversity happens. All in all I enjoyed this book. However, (kinda like the proverbial "but"), I must admit to being disappointed in the primary character, Luke. Here we have an (alleged) Navy SEAL who comes into contact with several foes on his journey home, ALL of which have tried to do him mortal harm and he RARELY has the presence of mind to keep his personal protection pistol within easy reach. No, instead he repeatedly is taken by surprise and comes out on the short end of the stick when it comes time to do battle face to face.First off, NO "Man" would let that happen to him given the circumstances of the world being as portrayed in this story, and CERTAINLY NOT a former U.S. Navy SEAL!So that aspect of the overall story was (is) disappointing. At least Luke eventually makes up for his transgressions by ultimately going all Medieval on his adversaries. All those faux paux's aside, this is an engaging story and I can recommend it to a potential reader.Oh, and one last thing...(SPOILER ALERT!!)(You were warned!!)If I EVER meet up with the daughter, Sierra, I'm going to give her a beating she will NEVER forget for all of the STOOPID things she does to endanger her family!!Even after being EXPLICITLY told to NOT contact outsiders.OMG!!!Daddy Luke or Mommy Liz need to take her across a knee and spank the daylights out of her. One mistake is regrettable but more than that (and rest assured there are PLENTY MORE!) and she needs a good Whoopin' across a knee or behind the wood shack.I SWEAR! SOME People's Kids!! LOLBuy this book.Enjoy this book.I did. (But WTH do I know, RIGHT?!?) LMAO

Nuclear destruction and an EMP
Very entertaining TEOTWAWKI. After nuclear bombs go off in major cities and later an EMP takes out the entire country's power grid, reuniting the family is very challenging. A family of four tries to make it to their mountain retreat despite lack of electricity and gas. They are challenged by thugs and sometimes helped by good people. Characters are likeable, story is interesting and there's at least another book coming after. Well worth the price.

Decent read
Moves quickly into the story without a lot of background, lets you get to know the characters as they react to unfolding events. Scenario is believable especially in light of current events. I took away 1 star only because It seemed society crumbled a little too quickly. I think there would be more of a shocked pause before it all falls apart.Recommend this book and can’t wait for the next one.

Gritty and the perils are realistic
Would have given it 5 stars but I had trouble believing some of the very dumb things some of the younger family members did, and this in a post apocalyptic world. However, perhaps I am being harsh as I grew up expecting this type of thing since I was a young child. My wife says I was born 150 too late, lol.The book is well written and very well edited. I look forward to the continuing story. Life is no picnic after the bombs drop and unfortunately the truth is that most people will resort to there most primeval self in such desperate times. This is a worthy read and definitely worth your time and effort.

Excellent, Excellent,Excellent, love it
Totally believable story about a possible future, that seems more and more likely to happen in one form or another. The characters are the type you can actually fall in love with, they seem so real. One thing I really liked about the book was the way the author tried to show how thin the veneer of civilization really is and how fast it can all fall apart ! And how do you know who to trust as it all falls apart.

Just Terrible
The protagonist and his family are the worst survivalists ever! The so-called former Navy SEAL has done a horrible job prepping his family. His college-aged daughter can't keep a secret and gloms on to virtually every man she meets. Both her and her brother continually disregard security. Mom refuses to allow the thirteen-year-old son to handle a rifle he's been trained to shoot (remember, this is post-apocalypse) , and rations food so she can have a "feast" when her husband makes it to the cabin. The author's understanding of EMP's seems iffy at best. I read 85 percent of the book and just couldn't finish it. This particular family was too stupid to live.

The end of the world meets a spoiled teenage girl
A gripping story from the first page. Ex-NAVY SEAL is halfway across California from his wife and children. Nuclear bombs begin to destroy civilization. He heads for home and observes civilization destroy itself around him. This book ends on a cliffhanger.
