You can leave them indefinitely just treat them like a house plant keep the soil moist and they are good to go

Q: Are these the same as leylandii? Can they be planted 2 to 3 ft apart and pruned into a tight hedge?

Yes, i've done it with these trees before. I'd go 3 feet minimum. Two feet is too close. You can go as far apart as 5 or 6 feet, it will just take longer for the hedge to grow solid.

They grow ~3’ per year, so 2 years to reach 6’
