It gives you a Native American perspective of snipits of their lives. Not moralistic like teepee style tales, just stories of everyday life. The story of the NA man in the Navy who gets sent to the brig is misleading. The Marine in charge berates the sailor. Having been in the Marines, this story show no different treatment to a Native American than anyone else in the Navy/Marine Corps.

A nice collection. Silko's "The Man to Send Rain Clouds," Bruchac's "Turtle Meat," King's "Borders," and Alexie's "War Dances" stood out the most for me. Those interested in indigenous literature should consider this book.

Great story telling
The book contained wonderfully written stories by a group of people that has greatly ignored for way to long! Support our indigenous population!

A Good Anthology
This book is an excellent anthology for undergraduate college classes to introduce the breadth of largely unrecognized Native American fiction. Several nations and belief systems are represented; also, some stories highlight Native interactions with the predominant white culture. It should be in every college library.

Very well written short stories
I am looking for novels by native American authors for my book group. This book is all short stories, and they are indeed very well written. So far, though, the only consistently well written novels by native American authors (in my humble opinion) are by Louise Erdrich.Even Sherman Alexie's short stories are better than his novels (again, in my H.O.).

Excellent intro to some great writers
I was already familiar with Sherman Alexie, but all the others were new to me. Some moving, some shocking and abrupt--but I liked just about all the stories. Although it was a little startling when "contemporary" turned out to include some very senior writers who were alive before 1900!Highly recommended!!!!
