Very powerful poems! But not for the average lover of poems.
Most people look for poetry to be full of love and beauty which they will not find here unless they look real hard. The lady has some remarkable wording and even some of the lines stand on their own with nothing more added. If you can read something and appreciate even parts of it then you have accomplished a feat scorned by many others. Her poems are based on Lesbian relationships which would go against the grain of most of the people I know, but I read a few selected works from a web site and was entranced by her ability to weave some very pretty phrases. That is the reason I ordered two of her books. This and another.Since I have read the books they are now destined for my local Library. And I can guarantee that my local Library will dispose of them as fast as possible. I checked first to see if I could get them there, but in the entire area not even one copy existed.

Exactly What I'm Looking For
Full of original, poignant, and thought-provoking poems. This is what the world of poetry needs more of; literature that has a sinister abstraction, but manages to deliver much-needed messages to readers. Definitely in my top five favorite poetry books.

Favorite author
Audre Lorde doesn’t often make the anthologies of American literature. She is brilliant, beautiful, and reminds everyone inside their struggles, we are meant to live, cherish, existe fully despide and even because of the limitations in life. I wish everyone read this book.

To read Lourde is to expand your understanding of the world as well as yourself. Savor her beauty and power.

Power(ful)
"Power," one of the poems in the book, spoke directly to me, in the context of a 21st century perspective. Nothing has changed since the poem was published (1978). I'm sorry that we lost her powerful voice so early (she died in 1992). Her poems--ask for no apologies.

A Forgotten Poetess!
Audre Lorde makes no apologies about herself as a Black woman, a mother, a daughter, a lesbian, a feminist and a visionary. Her poetry can be quite sensual and sexual at times. From the first poem entitled, "The Black Unicorn," and the "Solstice." Lorde is quite a vocal female character regarding her opinions and views. In 1981, her sexual orientation was not in vogue to be talked about. Lorde's open-ness is quite apparent in her poetry but I would have liked to know some background information regarding each poem since I'm not much of a poetry reader or follower of Audre Lorde but I do admire her work. Too bad, she's gone because she would have been quite an influence in today's society and her voice silenced by her death of cancer robbed the world of her voice.

Poetry at its finest.
What else can you say but read it. She is effortless in portraying struggle and love and every emotion in between.
