The Terminal List: A Thriller

As mentioned by others, Jack Carr's service to our country is something that should be appreciated and admired. However, this appreciation does not extend to his writing abilities. If you like a total lack of nuance, cartoonish one dimensional characters, a "hero" who savagely tortures his foes and terrorizes innocent women and children, this is the book for you. Also, if you're a right wing zealot who thinks all of the problems of the world are due to liberals, yeah, you're gonna love this one. But you also have to be gullible enough to swallow one of the most far-fetched tales of corruption that I've ever read.To use the divisive vernacular of our time, I'm no snowflake. I grew up on a farm and starting shooting and hunting at an early age. I am a life-long Republican, although the party's support of an obviously amoral leader have me reassessing my political affiliation. But this kind of simplistic drivel, regardless of which party it comes from, is part of what's driving us further apart. We only read and listen to the B.S. coming from our tribe which then further motivates our tribal instincts and our visceral hate for the other tribes.The author seems to think that avarice and corruption is limited to one party. Every character appears to be either a hero or a villian. If you are a conservative, law-and-order proponent who is threatened or challenged by shades of gray, don't worry. This book is completely devoid of complex thought and will not challenge you at all. It will fit perfectly into your confimation bias.

I have a relative who recently wrote, produced and directed his first movie (a real, actual movie, not a YouTube video). I recently saw it, and it was awful. I say that because I was reading this novel during the same time frame that I saw the movie, and realized that an artist's debut can be a big hit or miss. Jack Carr's first book is a hit. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and would recommend it to anyone interested in revenge thrillers, but especially to people who are interested in the SEALs and Spec Ops in general. This book will also appeal to those who are part of the "gun culture" like I am. In other words, if you're into guns, you'll appreciate the author's attention to detail in his accurate descriptions of firearms and how they're handled. (You'll especially appreciate that accuracy in a scene in which a character does some long range target practice.)I never buy novels. I always check them out for free at the library. But I bought this because James Yeager recommended it, and I'm glad I did. It was well worth the money and the time I spent reading it. I'm now going to pass it off to my dad, and I know he'll enjoy it, too. I look forward to Jack Carr's next novel.

This book was recommended by Brad Thor, and I can truly appreciate this suggestion while I am awaiting the next Scot Hrvath novel. This book is written by a retired US Navy SEAL, and is a truly incredible first novel by a very experienced veteran. The book is very well written, and the plot moves very quickly. Fortunately for me , I am recovering from a total knee replacement (too many parachute landing falls) and I was able to read in two days. Because it would have been virtually impossible to put down. As a physician and a military veteran, I am eerily suspicious that parts of this superbly integrated plot could be true. Jack Carr's Navy SEAL hero is larger-than-life, who epitomizes the SEAL motto - "the only easy day was yesterday." And the "bad guys" are truly evil. Hard to imagine any other "outcome" when evil forces take away EVERYTHING that LCDR James Reece cares about, setting in motion one of the best revenge thrillers of all time. Excellent descriptions of tactical planning and mission operation. And excellent, complicated conspiracies that connect corrupt governmental officials with corrupt senior military leaders and corrupt pharmaceutical industry agents. An excellent read for those readers who devour Brad Thor, Vince Flynn, Tim Tigner, Ben Coes, Steven Hunter, Brian Haig, and Jason Kasper. Hopefully, it won't take a decade for this book to make it onto the "big screen." Thus the question, who does this author envision playing James Reece.

There is not much I can say that hasn't been said in the other comments, but I must say that, if I were not a 74 yr. old great-grandmother, I would be trying to become a SEAL. I have been grateful that Vince Flynn (I miss him so) gave us Brad Thor, and now express my gratitude to Brad Thor for giving us Jack Carr. My biggest frustration is having to wait for their next release. I enjoyed reading the "Acknowledgements " which tells me that Mr. Carr knows a lot of the right people. Such a satisfying story; love to see justice done as it should be. Thank you.

Basically a book about revenge murder by a guy dumb enough to not follow up about a tumor that turns out to be benign so he'll live to kill again over and over for some other revenge reason. And the guy is supposedly a really sensitive father whose family is murdered, and while he's on his binge killing he's flirting with the female reporter who helps him. Violent junk. Skipped from half way through to the end to see how stupid the ending would be. Want disappointed. Don't bother!

I pre-ordered the book on James Yeager's recommendation and started reading it as soon as it arrived. I'm a little over half way though and it is excellent so far. It's well written, builds a riveting plot, and has excellent character development; I'm just getting to the point where James Reece is gearing up to unleash hell, I mean Justice, can't wait to finish it. This Hero is a true warrior but is still realistic and believable, still Human, unlike some Thrillers where the Protagonist is more a super-human figment of Hollywood's imagination. Keep the excellent books coming, Jack Carr, you have a new fan!!

Firstly, I have nothing but the highest respect for those who put themselves in harm's way to defend freedom. As you would expect from a former SEAL, the tactical stuff is as accurate as he can make it without giving away actual techniques.The story is a by the numbers revenge deal. Brave hero is betrayed by vacuous politicians/career brass types for money, who then kill his family, forcing him to extract his revenge. There are an awful lot of similarities to "the Punisher" and it was pretty apparent how the story was going to go very early on.My biggest problem is that it lacks tension and depth. When James Reece chases down his tormentors, they don't really stand a chance and it never feels like he'll come off second best. Obviously, SEAL team members are tough hombres, however the main character feels invincible, able to second guess his adversaries and deal with anything they throw at him. I get that that the other author is immensely proud of being a SEAL (why wouldn't he be), but having everyone who meets the main character be in awe of his "bad-assery" felt a little self-congratulatory.The characters are either good or bad on a comic book level. There is no middle ground and this means they lack any real depth. Because of this, it's very hard to feel anything when the bad guys meet their end or to really care about any of the good guys. I wasn't suitably invested in any of the characters, largely because they all feel like cardboard cut outs.Also, even for a self-confessed weapons nut, I thought he went a little overboard with the amount of gun/scope/bullet/knife detail that is crammed in here. Whilst it might be accurate to describe the techniques of long range shooting, I am not sure it really adds anything to the story other than to bloat the page count. Does it really matter which brand of knife he is using? (or tactical travel mug!)Likewise, there were a lot of acronyms and other military related stuff that felt unnecessary.It's not a bad book and there are certainly worse in the genre, however I never really got to a point where I was that invested/involved in the story. If you like the Jack Reacher novels (which is clearly where this is pitched), then you'll probably like this - if nothing else, at least it's tactically more realistic!

Thoroughly enjoyed this book of hard hitting, often brutal, but fully justified retribution. First book which I have read by this author, but will certainly be downloading more.Perhaps at times a bit too much information regarding the weaponry involved, but this does not detract from the overall enjoyment. The book is well written with strong story line and characters. I would definitely recommend it. Well worth five stars.Just one further comment, there is a glossary of terminology to be found immediately after the conclusion of the novel. Perhaps I missed any reference to this prior to commencing the story, but I am sure the reader will find it useful to be aware of it.AnOn

This book was an absolute joy to read. Rarely do I consider a book flawless, but this was as close to it as you'll get.The storyline had me fully engrossed and vying for the main character to succeed. Also, despite my usual inability to keep track of multiethnic characters, I found myself truly understanding each character's intentions and back stories.The characters involved were likeable, even the bad guys because they were so well written and unique in their own ways. It's not the deepest character-driven book but the main character is written very well and had me wanting him to win.This book is also phenomenally written. The research into weapons, cars, locations, industries, government, the navy SEALS is so well researched. Well, I presume it is as I know little about these things and he's sold me on them all!I would highly recommend this for ANYBODY who wants a genuinely good read and loves action!

Wow, this has certainly set the bar high for future books in the series. It had me hooked from the beginning & I even read all the “thankyous” the author specifically set out at the end. Something I normally skip over. This to me isn’t just a “blokes” book but incorporates so many different facets to the story line revolving around the main character. Family, friends, politics, corruption, war are just a few but retribution & payback the theme. I wonder what can possibly be next?

I was a silly Billy, read the second book and the third one first,yes there is a series but they can be read as one book,I must admit, I cheated with the 2/3 books, I got them from my local library ( they could not get the first one for some reason), so I decided to buy it, simply because I like the storyline, the author knows what he writes about ( ex special forces) so all the technical write ups are true. If you like gritty, hard hitting ,up to date stories this is the one for you,dare I say, once you have read this one, you will want to read the next book/s. I myself am waiting for the fourth book, yes ,there is one, but enjoy the book, I did.
