Clear, excellent, evidence-based guidance
Excellent book, and a much-needed addition to this field. It is clearly written, with heaps of information based on sound evidence and analysis of the latest research. There's so much opinion in the field of 'what you should feed your dog' and not enough unbiased, factual information has been available. Until now. The writers do an excellent job of laying out what is known and what the findings suggest, in an unbiased manner. I particularly appreciated the opportunity to check what I am doing now, and confirm where I was doing things right, as well as make notes about things that I will change, because I feed a home-based and primarily raw diet.Unlike too many others with extreme biases at either end of the spectrum (such as "you should only ever feed dogs a prey model diet! All commercial diets are poison! No, you should feed the best commercial cooked food! Raw will give your dogs diseases!" and so on) this book avoids the hysteria, and presents the facts and the evidence. A lot of what they have to say about many of the commercial kibble does not make for comfortable reading at all. But it does need to be known more widely. The best thing is that no matter what main diet you choose, they offer plenty of advice on what you can add/subtract/modify in order to offer your dog the best possible chance of good health, and explain why it matters and how it works. There is also much guidance on feeding for special conditions, including arthritis, diabetes or cancer. The only things that detracted a bit for me is that it is wholly USA based, so all brands mentioned are only those in the USA. Plus, I could have done with a bit less information on the lab test available, especially in a book. It felt a little bit like pushing one's own barrow and sat a bit uncomfortably for me - particularly since I'm in another far away country. But these gripes aside, brilliant book. One I'll reread several times, I suspect. I'm already recommending it to others and quoting bits.

Saved my dog from death, cure chronic disease, enable my aged dog in perfect health.
have 6 different dog-food books. This is the best best one.Pro:1. The fish-potato recipe in this book saved my dog from food position with raisin. Vet claimed my dog will die. I switched to this recipe that claims to "cleanse kidney". My dog survive. Then vet claimed that my dog will have permanent damaged-kidney. After sticking to this recipe for another 18 months, my 10-year dog fully recovered and has perfect blood test.2. It teaches me some very important and fundamental knowledge. e.g. functional food, inflammation. Not till then did I realize that chicken is not a functional food for most dogs. My dog suffered all kinds of bowel and stomach problem for 8 years. I've tried many brands of dog food. Once I cut chicken from his diet, all stomach issues are gone! (his vet prescribed chicken canned dog food before for treating stomach issues. Unbelievable :( ). Actually most of vet were not trained well in canine food science. As dog parents, we should stand up for our dogs.3. This book is based on science, Different from fold-lores dog food books, this book is very dense in knowledge, and very trustworthy. When your vet doubts about your home-made dog food, show this book to them and they will all shut up. :)Con: If I have to sayRecipe is not super clear. I got confused if portion means in weight or volume.PS: Dear authorsPlease write more follow-up books and include more recipes. Thanks!

Science Behind the Recommendations!
Because I'm a bit of a research nerd, I really appreciate the science behind the positions taken in this book. Yes, there are anecdotal findings as well, but they don't dominate. It's not a book that takes a hard core stand in one of the major feeding camps (prey model, BARF model, grain-free, etc.) Rather, it presents what Dr. Dodds and her team have found to be the healthiest ingredients for dogs, and why, without trying to fit it into "this" or "that" model. Love a little common sense!- It includes all sorts of vitamin and mineral options, but tells you where they can be found naturally in foods. Then, if additional supplements are needed, the book includes resources to help you find them.- There are very few specific recipes in the book, so if that's your aim, this might not be the book for you. Instead, there is guidance on how to create your own recipes using nutritious ingredients. (I would have liked a few more recipes to help me get started.)- If you're a firm believer in the prey model and don't want to consider other options, I don't think this is your book, as it includes veggies, fruits, and healthy grains.- If your dog suffers with allergies or thyroid problems, there is great info to be had here.

Pseudoscience
The book title in no way delivers what it promises. It contains no scientific approach to the subject. The author, W. Jean Dodds, has her own views and beliefs on nutrition, food allergies and hypothyroidism, for example, which do not reflect the current scientific consensus. She mainly quotes her own work, which cannot be found in any other reputable journal. Again and again she recommends the NutriScan test that she developed and offers. In addition, the book is filled with fear-mongering statements about commercial dog food, vaccinations, GMO, gluten etc.. If you follow the recommendations for choosing a dog food, there is no guarantee that your dog will be adequately nourished. Only the list of ingredients plays a role in the selection and not the nutrients. There may also be some correct statements in between. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.I can only recommend this book for people who do not want to leave their holistic bubble. It is not for people with a scientific understanding of dog nutrition.

Very understandable but bit overwellming for begginers
A little bit overwellming for beginners, although is well cientifically documented, just a bit disapointed because is not so easy to count callories, specially if you are an amateur like me in this new world of natural and raw food for our dogs.
