Q: Does this work as a varnish too?

No, I would not use this Golden Soft Gel Gloss as a varnish. I would use it as a glue.

Q: Is this thick enough to use for stencils like the glass bead gel?

It is probably a bit softer than that. It is soft and buttery, but doesn’t hold a peak. Will work with stencils very nicely, but won’t be a lot thicker than surrounding paint. Works great for collage.

Q: For use as an isolation coat, does the golden soft gel make the painting glossy? I plan to use a satin varnish over it.

GOLDEN Soft Gel Gloss, as its name says, gives a shiny finish. Satin varnish over it will matte down the gloss finish.

I love this product. This is my second tub.I use both full strength and also thinned with water if I want a lighter coat - and it also extends the life of the jar. Be sure and watch how do use this gel on the golden website. They have many excellent videos about their products.
