Very nice DVD
The sound mix on this DVD was excellent even though the concert took place 30 years ago. Obviously the video is not quite up to today’s standards but the music more than makes up for it in my opinion. I’d buy it again…

This band GROOOOVES!
Taped at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1977 this concert video shows its age in picture quality but delivers some good audio quality. This minor quibble aside lets get to the core of the DVD - the concert itself. AWB were on top of their game at 1977 and this concert footage shows a tight, funky and constantly grooving band bringing the crowd to their feet and dancing. Anchored by the heavy funk drumming by Steve Ferrone supported by percussionist Sammy Figueroa the energy keeps on flowing. The show is boldly opened with the classic hit "Pick Up The Pieces" and delivers hit after hit like "Cut The Cake", "Person To Person", "Work To Do" - wish I was there myself! I am glad that such great concerts become available now and look forward to more great music videos from the Montreux Jazz Festival series. Don't miss this one!

"77 Time Machine: When Funk Was King
Waited 3 years to purchase this. Shouldn't have. I'm a true funk-a-holic and this is the most professionally produced, professional band of the day. The music is flawless, but obviously wasted on the audience. Thank God for video tape and DVD. To see one of the funkiest bands of all time at their peak, in their prime and with high quality video and audio is truly a treasure. I hope people enjoy it as much as I did.

Maximum Funk!!!!
All you Funkateers out there, buy this DVD! I saw AWB for the first time this year in January and after seeing this DVD, kicked my self in the butt for not seeing them sooner with the original (almost) lineup. The sound quality was great but the film crew did a lousy job along with bad lighting. Worth every penney!

True R&B from unlikely source!!
The AWB is an amazing group of musicians, who play kick-a$$ funky music, and the amazing thing is that they're all white boys from Scotland!! Somehow these guys have managed not only to play R&B as though they grew up in Memphis, but they GET IT!! This album rocks...

Average Video
I watched this video with my fiance, we grew up in the 70's with the Average White Band. We could sing every song. We understand this was an earlier recording. We felt there was not enough excitement in this video. I would of liked to see a more updated live video, with the band really focusing on the music giving it a little more spunk. Not sure if i would recommend this one to friends.

The Above Average White Band
This was a purchase to enable me to have a DVD copy of a Dutch TV programme covering the Montreux Jazz Festival I saw while serving in Germany in 1978. Malcolm or 'Mollie' Duncan the tenor sax player in the band came from my home town Montrose and although a few years older than me he was well known as a local musician. Until Steve Ferrone joined the band as drummer, the band all came from Scotland which for me was sufficient reason to follow them , However to have boys from the East Coast of Scotland playing soul and funk that gave the likes of James Brown a run for their money was simply outstanding. The band's first hit AWB album was my soundtrack cassette through Jungle Warfare School in 1975 and is the album this live concert is based on apart from a couple of tracks, and it closes with their take on I heard it Through the Grapevine which was the first cover I had heard of this timeless Marvin Gaye classic. It became a stable of all their live concerts. The CD is excellent it shows the band at it absolute professional best in front of a subdued Swiss concert audience and this alone is a recommendation to get a copy of the DVD of the same concert. The sheer pace and seamless musicianship between all band members across the entire session is outstanding and captures the AWB at their early best. From the timeless Pick up the Pieces with the Dundee Horns of Roger Ball and Mollie Duncan setting the pace for the session, that starts the concert, they switch into their cover of the Isley Brother's, Work to Do which stands alone as a classic AWB track. The vocal blend between Hamish Stewart and Alan Gorrie on a Love of your Own provides you with one of the best tracks of the session, a treat for fans or newcomers to the AWB alike. The whole performance from start to finish is a delight, but you need to remember this was recorded on 43 years old video technology and it shows it but the sound is incredible. It picks up some outstanding guitar playing from Onnie MacIntyre and Steve Ferrone never misses a beat, it is overall a superlative performance from start to finish. There are a couple of additional bonus tracks such as If I ever Lose This Heaven that is a typically an outstanding vocal performance from both Hamish and Alan. I appreciate this will appeal to dedicated AWB fans but if you have never heard the band before and you are a funk and soul fan, give this an hour of your time you won't be disappointed and you will make this East Coast boy very proud that for more than 30 years the AWB held their own globally. The CD of the same performance is also available and mirrors exactly the DVD sound-track less the additional bonus tracks. Recommended

Very Worthwhile DVD Of An AWB Concert During The Band's Peak
As the title indicates, this is a live performance by Average White Band during the Montreaux Jazz Festival in July 1977. This is a very good DVD of AWB at its peak. Considering that this was shot before the days of VCRs, DVDs and music videos, one has to congratulate Claude Nobs and the Montreaux Jazz Festival for having had the foresight to videotape this concert at a time when there was no mass market for concert videos.Amazon has not included a set list on this DVD so here it is:1./ Pick Up The Pieces2. Work To Do3./ A Love Of Your Own4./ Person To Person5./ Got The Love6./ Sweet And Sour7./ Cut The Cake8./ I Heard It Through The GrapevineBonus Tracks1./ If I Ever Lose This Heaven2./ I'm The One3./ T.L.C.The sound on this DVD is good but the camera work and editing are pretty sloppy in places. The director often calls for extreme close up head shots that are basically looking straight up the performer's nostrils. In other extreme close ups the director calls for shots of instruments which make little visual sense; a lengthy shot (about 10 seconds or so) of the sound hole on a saxophone is one example that comes to mind. The cameras are often shooting directly into the overhead stage lights which, given the video camera technology of the day, essentially washed out the shot. So the video quality, while acceptable for 1970s video, is not great. On the bonus tracks, the director is only using one stationary camera set on a wide angle in front of the stage so the shot is of the entire atage while the band is performing. And that's it for camera work on the three bonus tracks! It's possible that these three tracks were shot during a sound check since there doesn't seem to be much evidence of an audience present during the three bonus tracks. But the sound quality on this DVD is good and that's what really matters. This is the Average White Band in concert in its heyday. If you like the Average White Band, this is very worthwhile DVD.

Great Show
If you're an AWB fan, this is a must-buy. Great playing; Hamish and Steve are fantastic! For a White Funk band to get into the Montreux Fest in '77 there has to be something to their abilities!
