Not as accurate at low humidity
This thing is very inexpensive, looks good, and does the job well enough, but not very accurate on low humidity. I bought 3 of them and put them all in a 75.5% calibration bag for a couple days. I calibrated them, left them in the bag another day to confirm they were all reading 75.5, then took them out and left them next to each other in my living room. Two days later, they ranged from 33% to 40%. Accurate enough for what I'm looking for, but not very accurate. I'm sure they are very accurate for humidors since you are supposed to keep those at 70%. And maybe they have calibration bags that are down in the 40% range, I didn't look. But it seems clear that they will only be accurate near the range you calibrate it to.

5 stars because of price, and accuracy.
Overall, no performance complaints, great for the price. Corresponds with digitial hygrometer's accuracy. The only complaint I have with this little analog hygrometer, is come calibration time. When turning the calibration screw, the indicator needle floats back and forth quite a bit. It is hard to set it correctly, but once you do, it remains relatively accurate for awhile. Overall, for the price, I would highly recommend.

Good product and value
This hygrometer measures about 2 1/4 inches across and comes with a magnet that you can apply to the back. I'm currently using it to measure humidity in multiple rooms in my house, then compare the measurements to and calibrate my humidistat. It works well for this purpose.I don't have any other hygrometers, so I can't compare it's accuracy. However, I was able to calibrate it using instructions I found here:[...]Regarding calibration, you can use a flat head screwdriver to turn a screw type hole in the back. The screw was very sensitive when turning, and this made it more difficult to calibrate than I would have liked. While following the instructions above, I actually made a very tiny hole in the plastic bag and inserted the tip of the screw driver though it, adjusting it back and forth till I had it as close to perfect as I could get it, which should be within about 1% of a true reading (acceptable to me). This is why I'm rating 4 stars instead of 5.Also, no batteries required, which is great.

Brass Analog Hygrometer Advertised as Certified - Wait, it arrived Uncertified...
I really trust in items that remind me of the sailing days. Nice brass, good old fashion basic analog dial and pointer. Compact appearance. This hygrometer seemed to be the perfect fit and it is allegedly certified! That certainly takes the doubt away from making the right choice. However...The item that arrived did not look like the photo in the sales advert. The dial on the shipped product did *not* say Certified. It did not come with any documentation at all, just in a bubblewrap envelope inside of a cheap looking box that you would normally expect contained a cheap toy made in the far east. That is what appeared to have been shipped. A cheap toy. Not a certified brass hygrometer. This unit not only had flaws in the brass, it did not register anywhere near the readings of other proven hygrometers. Its only value was as a semi-attractive paperweight.I would never have bought this item if there were no positive reviews. Perhaps the positive reviewers of the past received certified units. There is no doubt in my mind that the unit shipped to me was far from accurate and far from anything but a cheap toy. I only tried it because of Amazon's generous free return system.I moved on to purchase not one, but two Caliber IV electronic hygrometers. They have proven very accurate and have the ability to adjust the readings if needed for greater accuracy. I will write a separate review for them very soon.Bottom Line: I give this brass hygrometer ZERO STARS, settling for one star as the bottom rating."Safe weather and smooth seas to those in search for the right product - keep a wary eye open as you navigate the seas of good and bad products. There are many gems to be found on Amazon.com(tm), but like any store, there are always items that are far from perfect. © 2013 KL Lewis"

It's simple and it does the job
It's simple. It looks nice. It will never need batteries. This is a truly lovely hygrometer. I have no complaints. You should calibrate it, either with a readymade calibration kit or a little bit of damp salt in a small container in a ziplock bag. (I read about that method on the internet, but I used a readymade kit. I have no way of knowing whether one is superior to the other. Theoretically they should give identical results.) (Calibrating it requires a screwdriver. Or possibly the edge of a dime would work.)In this era of battery operated products that go obsolete or break within six months, here's a device that has no reason to stop doing its job, ever. Kinda freaks me out a little, but in a nice way. Recommended.

Analog Hygrometer by Western Humidors
I read about these hygrometers on the Acoustic Guitar Forum. Yes, I bought these to place in my solid wood guitars' cases to monitor the humdity level, not to keep my cigars moist. Solid wood guitars should be maintainted at 45% relative humdity if possible, in the winter time to prevent cracking. I purchased 4 of these, and am very happy with the results from these relatively inexpensive hygrometers. They arrived in a timely manner, and were well packaged. They also are very consistant in their mesurements to each other. I am confident in their readings, and feel they can help me keep my guitars properly humidified this winter without spending big bucks on guitar humidifiers.

Not the most accurate out of the box
This is a nice looking hygrometer, which I bought for monitoring humidity in my basement to minimize operation of my dehumidifier to the required level. Out of the box, it read low. Now, it is an analog gauge, probably made in China, definitely not NIST-traceable like the $195 ones are. But it was bad. I recently calibrated it using the saltwater method, and it was off by over 20%. Another super-cheap, much older holmes plastic meter I put in the bag read exactly perfect. So beware of calibration of this unit. I also get the feeling that the needle sticks sometimes, so watch for that.

For guitars etc. (ca. 50% RH), BEWARE: mine reads high by 10%
I bought it for use in my classical guitar case. Since the unit is marketed for humidors, concerned with the 70% range, I give it five stars. But for instrument cases, read on...The optimal relative humidity (RH) for guitars is supposed to be around 50%, give or take 5%. RH will tend to fluctuate a lot if you live in a place with cold winters (due to indoor heating tending to dry the air out, aggravated by generally low humidity outdoors below -15 Celsius or so), or if there is a particularly dry or wet hot season.Although I am still calibrating, bouncing back and forth between damp NaCl (75%) and damp MgCl2.6H20 (33%). After a slight adjustment of the screw, I consistently read 75% for the table salt. For the bath salt (magnesium chloride hexahydrate: the wet-looking crystals, common form), I read 42% after 12 hours, consistently. It is supposed to be 33%, so that is something to be aware of if you are using it in your instrument case. (There is only one calibration adjustment possible, so I chose to make the NaCl 75% read exactly.)The rule I am going by is that, if in practice the hygrometer reads 60%, I will believe the RH is in reality about 50%, the target value. If it reads 50%, I will consider the RH to be getting too low. I'll take my chances on higher RH since it's mostly dry over here. It's worth mentioning that precise measurement of RH across a wide range is considered difficult, even in scientific circles and with expensive instrumentation. It remains to see if it will hold its calibration under the bumps of transport -- after all, it is not marketed for that kind of treatment. I like that the needle brushes the face for accurate reading from all angles. I love that it doesn't need batteries and looks great. I suspect the reading benefits from slight shakes/bumps, which may also be an effect of the needle brushing the face.

Four Stars
A good product but had to recalibrate it as it was off by almost 15%.

Works well.
All string players know how important it is to keep their instruments at the right humidity. I was able to paste this hygrometer onto the inside of my violin case. Unfortunately the glue came unstuck so I just cleaned off the magnetic disk and used contact cement to glue it again. It seems to work very well, I keep my violin between 40% and 60% humidity which seems to be the optimal level. My only concern is whether the hygrometer has been calibrated properly and I am not sure how to do that.
