I bought this book on a whim after discussing with my daughter the two books I remember checking out from the elementary school library the most, as a child. I don't know how many times I read this book as a child, but for some reason I loved it. It's about a bug family going on a shopping trip to town. All the items and stores they went to, or bought, were all names of bugs and I think that tickled my fancy bone. lol I would recommend this book, especially to those who have kids that like bugs.

An endearing classic, in my book!
'Mama and Papa cook supper over a firefly. They cook a meal of silverfish, asparagus beetles, and French-fried potato bugs. The bug family has fruit flies and squash bug pie for dessert'.It has been 15+ years since my two children first checked this book out at the library. My son is now a fourth grade teacher and when asked by his students about his favorite books as a child, this is one he mentioned. Going through my daughters scrapbook box, I found that she had copied the book word for word on pages of notebook paper in her then very immature hand. Pretty remarkable recommendation given all the good books that they were exposed to when young. Dahlov Ipcar books are simple and beautiful; a great combination for young minds that desire beauty and thirst for creative thinking. We should not take for granted those authors that give that beauty and inspiration to our children through their words and imagery; we have been blessed by them. I sincerely hope a reprinting of this book is in its future.

Publishers: please reprint this book!
Some great children's books, like Where the Wild Things Are, never go out of print. But that's really the exception that proves the rule: most great children's books (I suppose like most books in general) do go out of print. It makes you wonder, when you start browsing through all of the lame current offerings, why publishers aren't scouring through existing stock to pluck out the gems. This book definitely falls into that category: it's charming in every way. There's a homespun quality to the whole thing: it's about an everyday world that just happens to be populated by bugs rather than people. The bugs here don't do anything extraordinary: they just clean their houses, go to the store, to the park, to the zoo, and to the parade. But that's what makes it so fun: the bugs here are not creepy or scary, they're just ordinary family folk. This book is a real hit in our house, with our little boy AND his parents. Try to find it in the library!

One of my favorite childhood books
I loved this book as a child so much that a few years ago my mom special ordered it for me as a Christmas gift. I read it to my daughter now and she loves it too. The story is about a bug family where the dad is a "daddy longlegs" and the mom is a lady bug. They go shopping and buy potato bugs, squash bugs and silverfish to make for dinner. The book is full of clever narration using real bug names and the pictures are cute. There is a bug city parade, the bug family goes to the zoo (to see the camel crickets, and rhinoseros beetles) and in the end everyone goes to "bedbug." I highly recommend this charming book.
