Online Teaching At Its Best

Not Nilson's Best Work
I purchased this book to assist in online teaching during college campus closures due to COVID. There are many books on online teaching available, and I specifically chose this one based on Linda Nilson's previous work on self-regulated learning and specifications grading. However, this is a book I would not recommend to colleagues. The entire premise of the book feels forced, as if it were a push to publish "something" about online teaching right now, without actually digging into the concerns of online faculty. For example, the book is over 200 pages, while less than one page is devoted to academic dishonesty (in the age of Chegg). The lack of attention to this critical issue is concerning.Much of what is written in this book is already provided to online faculty through a university's center for teaching and learning. A better read would be Small Teaching Online - since the author Flower Darby is a seasoned online instructor and gives excellent recommendations which faculty can implement TODAY.

Wish I had more information
This book is for the beginner online teacher learner. Not for the experienced online teacher. I thought there were some parts of the book that I could use, but there aren't any really. I'm going to be returning it.

Harmonious marriage of best practices for both online teaching and instructional design
Nilson and Goodson present a much-needed resource that combines research and best practices for teaching and instructional design. Highly practical, yet with a firm foundation in research and theory, this book addresses a gap in the current offerings on online teaching. A valuable contribution to our growing knowledge about how to teach online effectively.
