Gets the job done.
I bought this to install onto a Vista 64-bit system. I plugged it in and initially tried to use the included mini CD-ROM to load the drivers, but for some reason my DVD drive couldn't read it. So I let Vista find the drivers automatically and it installed the drivers easily. But it wouldn't work. I tried re-installing the driver, unplugging it and plugging it back in, but my computer still couldn't find the COM port. I finally rebooted my computer, and ever since then, this adapter has worked perfectly with no issues. It would've given it 5 stars if the driver installation had gone smoother. Other than that it works perfectly and I'm totally satisfied.

"Just works" No problems.
Only reason I don't give 5 stars...Could have one of those spring loaded retractable cables. And WHY does everyone package stuff in those plastic bubble package things? It is such a hassle to get the product out of the package, and then it just becomes trash. Why not just use a little cellophane bag with a cardboard tab on top? That would be more environmentally friendly, lighter, and easier, and cheaper.

Excelent device
I have owned multiple of these devices. Each one I have owned was for work and each one was passed on to a co-worker when their old laptop that had an RS-232 port died or when their USB to RS-232 adapter failed. Some of these failed adapters my co-workers used did not work because windows was not able to load drivers automatically. Instead of searching for proper drivers I pulled this device out of my tool bag, plugged it in and they were able to use it within a few minutes with no searching and no trouble on any windows PC I have tried(XP, Vista and 7). The only thing I recomend would be to get a good USB extension cable with it as the small 3 foot one is to short for some situations, if you wont need anything longer the cable did work. I also recomend getting all the adapters you need for this to work for multiple interfaces, the three I purchased were the gender changes (both types) and a NULL modem adapter. I had to get two gender changes for situations where I needed some extra lenth at the RS232 end. But why I still give this 5 stars is for the fact that it doesnt have the female screw down ends on it, so it works with one particular piece of equiment we have that has the female screwdown lugs on it, they dont mesh up if you have two female sets of lugs on them and you have to take them off of the adapter.

Worked, briefly
This adapter installed automatically under Windows 7 64 bit without any problems. However, it behaves strangely when continuously transferring a lot of data- I think this may have to do with the lack of asynchronicity mentioned in another review. This was tolerable until it stopped being recognized, and started getting very hot to the touch. I unplugged, rebooted, tried again, and had the same result- Windows didn't recognize that a device of any kind had been plugged into the usb port, and the device got very hot.I'm still giving three stars because I think that I either got a lemon, or static discharged it to death.

Used for receiver upgrade...
I purchased this adapter for 3 reasons. First, it had generally great reviews, second, it comes with its own drivers (which is something you don't necessarily get with a regular DB9-USB cable) and lastly, because it allows for use with a longer M/F USB if needed. I own a Denon 2309 audio/video receiver which has a serial input on the back and was in need of a firmware upgrade to eliminate some bugs in its operation. My options were to either take or ship the receiver to a repair center for the upgrade or do it myself.I installed the drivers for this adapter on my 6 year old year laptop running Windows XP without any problems. The installation established a COM5 port on the laptop. I hooked the laptop USB to the serial port on the Denon receiver using the 2 foot cable and followed the directions included with the firmware file. The Denon software allowed me to check the communication between the two devices before proceeding with the upgrade. The firmware was updated successfully and I am quite pleased with this adapter although I may never have any use for it again.

Sending G-code programs to CNC
This is the first USB to Serial port adapter that I have used, or heard of, that will actually work for sending G-code programs from a computer to the control on a CNC machine. Until now, I have had to keep an older computer that has a serial port up and running just to be able to transfer files. I had tried a few other adapters a few years ago, with no success; and read many reviews of other products that indicated they would not work either. After reading the reviews of this product, and after getting a new Windows 7 x64 computer, I decided to give this unit a try. I was happily surprised that Windows 7 recognized the adapter, and automatically installed the drivers. The only problem I encountered was not with the adapter, but with Windows 7 when I learned that Hyper-terminal is no longer included in the operating system. I did some research online, and was able to quickly find a way to copy hyperterminal from my old computer and install it on the new one - and since then everything has worked flawlessly.

You get what you paid for
Basically, this adapter works as advertised, but:1. This product is supplied with small CD that may not fit into slot of your CD driver. Then it will require you to copy the content to the different media that fits your computer.2. As I found during the FCC Part 15 Class A test - this product FAILS. It means that sales in the USA are illegal. You still may use it for your own purpose but if you resell it it must comply with FCC.3. Installation was a little shaky - depending on the operating system, but I was able to use it in 2000, XP and Vista.
