Amazing snare for the price
All I can say is the BOB was my first pork purchase ever after playing Tama and Ludwig for the past 20+ years and wow this thing is versatile! Itโs no black beauty but for the price it gives it as massive run for performance. Low, medium or cranked tuning and this thing sings however you need. Would highly recommend if youโre in the market for that high end Ludwig sound but donโt want to shell out the cash.

This is your holy grail of affordable snares
I'll add a quick summary of what I think of this amazing snare:1. This is the death of the black beauty. Never before have I heard a brass shell come so close to the tone of a black beauty. Not a PDP Ace, or the Tama or Pearl attempts. Nope. This is it, folks. I've play the same back line black beauty for over 10 years, because my buddy rents it out to a conference I play at every year. I know that drum so well that the (other brand's) attempts at replicating that sound just never cut it for me. Pork Pie and worldmax figured out the formula.2. It is a LOT of bang for the buck. Not only is the shell a quality brass shell, but the hardware is also really good for the price. The stock heads are good enough to fool me. It's basically the ambassador coated/hazy situation, but I guess Remo Taiwain made these ones for Pork Pie. They're good.3. This drum has a deluxe set of features for the price. Tube lugs, solid hardware, a pretty good throw off, and a killer black nickel plating. And (Here's the part you don't usually get with drums these cheap) it seems to be durable! I'm too cheap for cases, and these cheaper drums always make me nervous. But I looked it over pretty closely and I don't see any compromising design flaws.Bottom line is, get over the glamour of owning a ludwig black beauty. Most professional drummers will tell you, It's not the instrument you play, its HOW you play it. This drum took the black beauty sound and makes it available for literally a quarter of the price. It beats several DW snares I've heard, and it's at an unbeatable price. Like another reviewer above me said, you have to get over the idea that cheaper is less in this situation because that simply isn't true here.My only recommendations are to try die-cast hoops and a Remo controlled sound batter head. They work for me on this snare, and most metal snares as well.

In the Pork, all is good (french joke...)
As a matter of fact, I was reluctant to order this item. Pork Pie isn't as well-known as other greater and older brands, and its products aren't introduced into France. This hesitation was not justified : the Big Black snare drum is excellent, its making is well finished and its sounds well, no need to spend hours adjusting it. Unlike other brass snare drums, it doesn't emit any undesirable harmonics and the latter are easily controllable. Moreover, it has style. What more could anyone want ! This one is my sixth snare drum, and the third made of metal. Whoever thinks of a snare drum, inevitably thinks of LUDWIG. I've got one LM402 and I must admit that it is by far the best when compared to the Supraphonic which is badly finished, has got a cheap starter and sounds well but nothing more.In my opinion, Mike Tarrani, another forum user, is absolutely right and I do agree with him.Bill DETAMORE for PRESIDENT !And great job from Amazon/DHL: two days from USA to France.

Great sounding snare with ability to tune high or low.
At <$200 price, I couldn't resist. I never had a pork pie and heard this was modeled after the black beauty Ludwig snares, so I decided to take the plunge on it. With all the stock parts, the snare sounds really good. Crank the snare side and tune the batter to your liking. Tuned up high, it gives great pop. Tuned low, you'll get punch. Great tuning versatility for any kind of genre. The finish and appearance is great. This has just become one of my favorite snares!

Amazing value!
This drum is ideal for someone who has been trying to save for a Ludwig Black Beauty, but just can't bear to fork over $600+ for that legendary drum. Yes - they are different, and I am not into debating which is better and why. I just know that this drum is fantastic! Very solid, smooth action on the snare throw-off, great tone. I used it on a gig right away and the rest of the band was knocked out with its sound. So was I!

Amazing drum.
I have played drums for 12 years and have toured full time for the last 3. I have played all kinds of backline kits and snares from all over the world. This might be the best sounding snare drum I have ever played. Buy the Pork Pie Big Black Snare if you want a good drum. Its that simple.

Real Deal
This snare is even better that what I expected...It has all of the great sound everyone says, but I was shocked to see how well make and great looking this snare is. I expected just black, but it shines black like a jewel finish. The throw is nice and best of all...it plays so well. Man it looks nice!!
