Excellent book.
I`ve had this book for over a year now and have found myself referencing it more and more often, not just for my own work but for the benefit of my painting students.I have followed Saville`s progress ever since I saw her graduation show at GSA and was fortunate to exhibit alongside her in a show at the Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh in 1994 where she contributed three works - a major alternative version of "Propped" and two studies, one of which was for "Branded". I was impressed by her work then; this volume more than confirms her status in my mind as an outstanding talent. As others have noted, there are relatively few works actually included, but for me, that is beside the point; the volume is rich in detailed close-ups of her brushwork revealing her wonderfully loose technique; in her brief interview with Simon Schama she mentions her affinity with abstract art - something I not only share but have explored in my own art for over a decade - I find myself very much in tune with her work. The imagery is perhaps not for everyone, but I have never yet met a serious painter who has commented disparagingly on her work. This is - currently - the most easily obtainable and affordable book on Saville available; the texts are thin, but the work is remarkable, rewarding and unflinching. An excellent addition to any serious art library.

Some things I liked, some things I didn't.
The media could not be loaded. I was interested in her earlier work, the huge canvases of herself on display in the Saatchi gallery as well as 'Strategy' and 'Juncture' etc. Unfortunately these were smaller on the page than necessary, but the quality of the images were excellent. I found this the most disappointing. Saville's work is about large scale, so why did the publisher choose to print them small on the page, leaving a lot of unused space? It includes photos in her studio, enlargements of the work and clippings from some of her sketch books showing newspaper pictures and medical textbooks, which reveal the source of some of her later images.I think the book could have been better, with larger images and more in-depth interviews. I was also unaware of her more recent work, which is distasteful, but that would be entirely my own opinion. On the other hand, the close up images of her work do reveal her brush marks and are very interesting. Her use of colour is really highlighted by this.I do not want to repeat other reviews. It wasn't a complete disaster, just disappointing in parts but with good detailing of her work.

An Important Painter
Thanks, Amazon. About a week before Christmas my A level art student daughter announced that she really wanted a book on Jenny Saville, and you did the business for me. I paid about £5 for rapid delivery, and it duly arrived three days later. A beautifully produced book, and a happy girl on Christmas Day.

Excellent Artist - Excellent Book
Printed on good quality paper, this book gives you an insight in to her working process as well as reproducing some of her work. A good buy!The original one star rating was a complete oversight & obviously at odds with my review. Apologies to anyone offended or bemused by this contradiction.

beautiful pictures
Fabulous book - beautiful pictures, including close ups to show the raw detail. Also a few articles on Jenny Saville and her art, and an interview with her. Well worth the money if you are interested in modern life drawing.

Beautiful and Grotesque
All other considerations aside, Jenny Saville can paint, and this book proves it, close up and pouring across the pages. Truly a "painter's painter," Saville uses heightened color discovered, apparently, through manipulating photographs in Photoshop, then painting the results. However she arrives at it, her paint is gorgeous, the colors luscious and compelling. Without a doubt Saville blows away the competition in contemporary figurative realism. For my money, Lucien Freud has nothing on this young female painter. On the other hand, anyone thinking of buying the book should realize that many of the figures are grotesque, raw, actually painful to look at. Art historian Linda Nochlin calls them "hugely disturbing," and I have to agree. It is, in fact, the virtuosity of the paint that delivers such a visceral gut punch when applied to the subject matter, which ranges from obesity plus plastic surgery to men with large [..] plus male genitalia, all displayed in gargantuan proportions right in your face. The articles accompanying this monograph are excellent as well -- and not nearly disturbing as the images.

Jenny Saville-I'll take what I can get.
"The greatest living realist painter" is how Robert Hughes described Lucian Freud. Move over Lucian. I for one am stunned at the virtuosity of Saville. I agree with the first reviewer that I would have loved to have a tomb about 300+ pages of just artwork. I guess we will just have to wait. But what we do have here is equally worth the price. I found the studio photos and reference photos very enlightening. You can see where her ideas have come from and literally see the photos she is working from. From an artists point of view, this is wonderful. The reproductions that are in the book are very good. I really, really wish we could have seen more of her drawings as I think these reveal the real strength of her work. I find the shock value of some of the subjects a little old, but have no problem because the pure application of paint and line is so very beautiful. Would we even be writing about Jenny Saville if whe was painting flowers or landscapes? Irregardless, she is who she is, and I love it. A must see is the painting of the cow carcass. Stroke for stroke, this is one of the best paintings every done.
