Did you know that if you take a multivitamin containing 100% of the recommended daily level of vitamin D, drink milk, eat fish twice a week, and get a little midday sun, you are almost certain to be deficient in vitamin D? Did you know that many doctors desiring to monitor their patients' vitamin D levels, order the wrong blood test? Did you know that the reference range shown on the test results is wrong? (That is, even if it says you have enough, you are probably deficient.) Did you know that government guidelines on how much vitamin D you need are understated by a huge factor? Did you know that vitamin D has been found in medical studies to help significantly in the prevention and treatment of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and all autoimmune diseases?Dr. Sarfraz Zaidi is an endocrinologist who has been evaluating and correcting patient's vitamin D deficiencies for ten years and has uncovered misconceptions, misinformation, and medical oversights that are shocking. In testing thousands of patients, Dr. Zaidi found only ONE person, a fair-skinned lifeguard, who had optimal vitamin D without taking megadose supplements. Similarly, he never encountered anyone whose vitamin D blood level was dangerously high. What this means is a major public health crisis comes inadvertently from doctors who warn you about overdosing, but in doing, so they actually cause you to be deficient which puts you at FAR GREATER RISK than an overdose. The book contains interesting case studies. Read about Anna on page 55 who suffered MS which was partially caused by a vitamin D deficiency that no doctor thought to check for 13 years. When Dr. Zaidi reversed the deficiency the patient's condition improved.Do you know how easy it is to correct a vitamin D deficiency that you probably have? Listen up; this is complicated. Step one is pick up a copy of Power of Vitamin D and read it carefully to get a solid background on the subject. Then go to your doctor and ask for a 25(OH)D blood test, also known as 25-hydroxy vitamin D. (Don't let your doctor talk you into a 1,25(OH)2D blood test. It's the wrong one as explained on page 127 and 128.) Get the results. If it's under 50 ng/mL or 125 nmol/L (and it's highly likely that it is), go to the chart on page 143 to determine your daily dose of vitamin D. Once you know the daily dose, go to a health food store and tell the clerk you'd like to take that dose of vitamin D3. It will probably set you back 10 to 20 cents a day. Take the vitamin D every day with food. In three months go back for another blood test. Keep increasing the dosage until you're over 50 ng/mL but under 100 ng/mL.How hard was that? If everyone in the US followed these safe, simple steps, the number of deaths due to chronic degenerative disease would drop sharply. The CDC tells us about 1.5 million Americans die each year of chronic disease. The actual number saved if everyone optimized their vitamin D is not knowable exactly but it is certainly in the hundreds of thousands EACH YEAR. The great part is you get to choose which group to be in: Currently you are probably in the larger group that is deficient in vitamin D and twice as likely to die prematurely of horrible degenerative diseases. Or you could join the smaller group with optimized vitamin D; hundreds of medical studies clearly show this group to be largely protected from those diseases. Obviously, there is no silver bullet that can protect you 100% and no one is claiming vitamin D has that power. But if you want to stack the deck in your favor, this is an extremely easy, safe, low-cost approach that requires no major effort or lifestyle change. But you need to know what you're doing and that's where this book comes in.Power of Vitamin D is a fantastic introduction to this sometimes confusing subject. It is relatively short, very easy to read, fairly comprehensive, and offers clear explanations. Here are some things I like about the book: a list of diseases on the front cover that medical studies have definitively linked to vitamin D deficiency; absolutely clear statements in several places advising what your blood level should be for optimal health; an explanation of the two types of "units" that blood test use, and how to interpret and convert between the two; instructions as to which blood test to get and why; a clear description what it takes to overdose (instead of a bland warning not to take too much); it mentions serious flaws with government guidelines on vitamin D that have been loudly criticized by many longtime vitamin D researchers; and it includes interesting case studies involving real patients.Because Dr. Zaidi covered these points in such a clear, concise, and convincing manner, I am happy to give Power of Vitamin D the highest rating of 5 stars. Whether you are just beginning the journey or have already read many articles, this book has lots to offer on every page. But don't forget, you're not "done" when you finish reading the book. It only can help you if you follow the steps outlined three paragraphs ago and stated in far greater detail in Chapter 23. If you are part of the 97% that haven't yet optimized your vitamin D level, implementing the suggestions in this book may well change your life for the better.Note to medical professionals: If you happen to be a medical professional, I GUARANTEE your patients will be far better off if you arm yourself with this knowledge and follow through with further study. And I wouldn't be surprised if your practice flourishes once your patients understand you are protecting them against future serious illness.

Good information on Vit D with some caveats
Dr. Sarfraz Zaidi has provided some good clinical information for layman in this book. Vitamin D has been under used and wrongfully thought dangerous for decades - most people are deficient in this important Vitamin and do not realize that sun exposure is not enough. Further - since the early eighties the Pharmaceutical Industry and beauty industry, mostly owned by Big Pharma, has insisted on people staying out of the sun and using expensive sunblock. Although my personal experience is that we have to look at a number of areas in individual and collective lifestyle including diet - the ill health of our population since that time is documented and it may be that Vit D supplementation is one of the elements in restoring our health.I often suggest to friends and clients that they read several books on a topic that they are trying to learn more on so that they are exposed to a number of viewpoints. Dr. Zaidi has clinical experience with patients and shares some of their stories of healing with the reader.I was disappointed that Dr. Zaidi did not provide any information in this book on the need to take Vitamin K2 with Vit D. There is much research and information, for instance from Dr. Joseph Mercola at [...] and elsewhere that suggests taking Vit D without K2 is actually harmful. Vit K1 is something that we get with Green Leafy Vegetables (I advocate Green smoothies with low glycemic fruit/berries and working up to several cups of green leafy vegetables plus salads for K1) - - but K2 is primarily available in pastured eggs from hens getting lots of green grass and organic, pastured fed meat animals - it is hard to get enough without supplementation. If you have an interest in Vit D and the benefits higher amounts can give you I would also recommend Jeff T. Bowles' THE MIRACULOUS RESULTS OF EXTREMELY HIGH DOSES OF THE SUNSHINE HORMONE VITAMIN D3 MY EXPERIMENT WITH HUGE DOSES OF D3 FROM 25,000 to 50,000 to 100,000 IU A Day OVER A 1 YEAR PERIOD [Kindle Edition. It is outrageously written, all over the map, makes many claims that you will have to check with your health care providers, but packed with Vit D Studies that he constantly updates and are available with this Kindle edition. And at some level he makes sense. http://www.amazon.com/MIRACULOUS-EXTREMELY-SUNSHINE-EXPERIMENT-ebook/dp/B005FCKN2S/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1361980489&sr=1-3&keywords=vit+dThen there is Michael F. We have also given it to our many dogs to good effect and feel that it has helped those with cancer live longer when integrated with good diet and other healing modalities under the supervision of Veterinarians. If you are interested this is a good book to start with along with a few others - then speak to your health care provider. Here is another book on Vit K 2 which I have not yet read, but the more than sixty reviews are excellent if you want to go deeper into your personal research - Vitamin K2 and the Calcium Paradox: How a Little-Known Vitamin Could Save Your Life [Kindle Edition] http://www.amazon.com/Vitamin-Calcium-Paradox-Little-Known-ebook/dp/B0065OPZAU/ref=sr_1_6?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1363906588&sr=1-6&keywords=vit+DRemember that I am not a doctor and this is for educational purposes only - - please consult your doctor - but my preferred form of Vit D is NOW Vit D 5000 units. My brother, my friends, clients have all found this a good product compared to the pricy ones - and we have been using it with our many wonderful dogs of the UN-Chained Gang with good results as well - http://www.amazon.com/NOW-Foods-Vitamin-5000-120-Softgels/dp/B002EA99HE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1363906976&sr=8-1&keywords=NOW+vit+D-And We use the NOW Vitamin K2 - http://www.amazon.com/NOW-Foods-Vitamin-100mcg-Vcaps/dp/B0013EJ5QM/ref=sr_1_5?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1363907152&sr=1-5&keywords=NOW+vit+K2PLEASE NOTE - we have no stock in or connection to NOW vitamins.

Power of Vitamin D is a LIFE CHANGER! A must read if you care about your good health!
This book I purchased for many reasons, one reason is that I suffer from muscle pain, and have had some dental problems so this book has helped me greatly! For me, I have found this book to be very easy to follow and understand and I recommend it to you for the following reasons:1) There are 24 chapters in this book and each chapter is complete with very, very helpful information (I learned a lot about Vitamin D after reading this book).2) Each chapter is superbly written in an easy to understand way that I find so easy to follow and each chapter is PACKED with helpful information regarding how Vitamin D is needed in every cell and area of the body.3) The MOST HELPFUL CHAPTER I FOUND IS Chapter 16 – Vitamin D Deficiency and Dental Problems. The author shared his story of having a molar tooth fracture for no apparent reason and he realized it was Vitamin D Deficiency. And just a month ago the same thing happened to me, and I have to have dental work done because of this. So now I am on Vitamin D and taking it daily to prevent more of this unwanted occurrence.4) Second most helpful chapter for me was Chapter 6 - This is called Vitamin D Deficiency And Body Aches, Pains and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. This Chapter has enlightened me so much that I am now taking more Vitamin D and reaping the health benefits. This book has been a life changer (for the better) for me! In fact, one of the case studies in this chapter had a situation so close to mine and was treated successfully with Vitamin D, what a great thing to discover!!!5) This superb book covers lots of information about Vitamin D yes, yet it covers actual case studies and so much more, it is a book that I believe changed the quality of my health and for the better.Highly recommend this book to all!

Utterly cured my autoimmunity disease
A brilliant book. So good to hear a doctor talk sense rather than endlessly pushing drugs with side effects. Only thing I'd add is ultraviolet lamps are cheap now plus many places do cheap sunbed sessions. Might be essential in colder countries. For diet I found my autoimmune disease to mean I am ultra intolerant to lots of things. I have to leave out dairy eggs gluten. So diet isn't right for me. Look up any foods that cause inflammation. Perhaps get an Eliza intolerency test. From my experience I don't think diet crucial but sunlight is. . Perhaps lack of vitamin d lead to ultra sensitivity. Sit beside an open door if too difficult to get out

Poor Nutritional Knowledge
I bought this book hoping to enhance my knowledge of Vitamin D and its benefit in combating poor health. The chapter on nutrition is very basic advising readers to stay away from processed and high sugar foods. However, the book lost all credibility for me with the author stating that honey should be used as a sweetener "because each honey molecule consists of only glucose and therefore doesn't require any breaking down in the intestines before its absorption into the blood." This is blatantly incorrect as whilst honey does contain some glucose it most certainly is not 'only glucose'. It is very high in fructose (the sugar he later tells the reader to avoid), as well as containing sucrose and maltose. If this fact is not known to the author then one has to question the remainder of the advice.

Master hormone
This is an excellent review how vitamin D is involved in absorption of calcium from the gut and it works in concert with vitamin k2 and interplay with parathyroid hormone in the blood and deposition of calcium in correct places such as bones and teeth along with vitamin k2prevents calcification in arterys ,kidneys etc.

Excellent book
A very detailed, but very readable, account of why we should all be taking vitamin d supplements with higher doses than we might think. There is a lot of confusion and conflicting advice around this topic and the author provides much needed clarity.
