Good Tool for Emtek Mortise Locks
I bought this tool to help out some friends whose contractor didn’t finish the job. I have a carpentry background, but don’t work as a finish carpenter. I would rate myself as a good DIYer. I used the tool to install 5 Emtek pocket door mortise locks. I found the tool to be much faster, easier, and more precise than using a drill and chisels. Setup was slow, and centering the cutter is difficult. However, once it is set up it makes pretty quick work of the mortise. I found a could take off about 1/16” of material on each pass. To make a 4” deep required about 60 passes. That was fine by me. Perhaps when you get used to the tool you can do more in a pass. My drill of choice was a 20v desalt cordless. It seemed to perform better than my corded drill.

Great tool for the DIY
This is a great cost effective tool for the DIY. The tool worked great to open the mortise lock opening and cross drilled handle holes as well as striker plate openings.Highly recommend it. Fast service and fair pricing.I especially liked the way the tool clamped on the door, and the ease of setting up slide stops and depth of cut.

Piece of cake!
The media could not be loaded. Tried to hire a “door person” to come install this complicated Mortise pocket door lock from Rejuvenation, but no one would return my call. Bought this tool and also a Dewalt compact plunge router and together had no issues installing this lock. Probably would’ve spent more hiring someone to install this lock than the tools cost, and now I have these tools to keep. Definitely took my time and went slow. I also bought a 2” x 6” x 8’ Doug fir board and mounted it (vertically) outside the house first to use it as my “test door” and it worked good on that so I moved on to the door inside the house. Lots of sawdust!

Dull cutter, makes jarring rough cuts
Cutting bit was super dull out of the box. Used as intended, making shallow passes like a mortise router would, with corded drill running 3000 rpm's but it still shuddered and tore the wood fibers instead of actually cutting. I ordered a replacement cutting bit and it was *slightly* better but still more of the same. Advancing the cut was agonizingly slow, unpleasantly jarring, and produced mediocre results at best. Faster and cleaner for me to use an auger bit and sharp chisels.Souber cutting heads are much sharper out of the box, but are not interchangeable with these luckyway cutting heads. To its credit, this unit can plunge deep enough to do Emtek pocket hardware right out of the box, where the Souber requires purchasing an extension to reach that depth. It also feels quite robust and the drill shaft bearings appear to be easily replaceable behind basic snap rings. This unit does not automatically center itself on the door, but does thereby allow drilling for offset mortices if you desire. The basic Souber unit centers itself automatically, but requires purchase of an additional adapter to drill offset. This Luckyway unit has mortise height adjustment independent of the clamping mechanism, the Souber mortise height is set by the position of the door clamps.Depending on your criteria, the Luckyway could be what you want. It is cheaper and has more adjustability and capabilities (on paper) than the basic Souber unit. However, all of this is rendered moot by the abysmal cutting bits. Unless you are very broke, AND very clumsy with hand tools you should either stick to using a basic drill/auger + chisel or pony up and buy a Souber. If you only have a few locks you should still buy the Souber and sell it to recoup most of the $$$ when you are done. At least that will have some resale ability where this Luckyway will have basically zero value on the used market.

This is the one to get! However...
This is actually the second of two very similar "door opener" mortise jigs I got on Amazon. This is by far the better of the two, and at about $100 it's a pretty good deal. When using it, it seems that it is best to remove material on a downward pass, and the faster your drill goes the better! However! I strongly recommend purchasing a few extra and replacement items. For example, the shaft collar that limits the depth of the mortise likes to slide and mar the shaft (ruining both the shaft and the work piece). After some trail and error I found that 15mm shaft collars with a single clamping screw work quite nicely (see pictures). I got a set of 4 for another $10 or so right here on Amazon. Next thing is that the smallest bit that comes with this is 18mm wide. Since the lockset I was installing was only 14mm wide I thought this was an excessive amount of wood to remove. These bits have an M10 thread on them and if you search M10x16mm bit you can find a 16mm version of the these bits on Amazon. Only downfall is that they take about two weeks to arrive. Finally, since the lockset is square, and a round bit can only make a round hole, you'll need to chisel out the corners. For this, I also got a 16mm chisel. The set comes with an 18mm chisel.
