The Innovative Admin (All Things Admin Book Series)

100% Recommend
I have never worked as an Executive Assistant, but I picked up this book wanting to explore and learn more about the profession and what it takes to be a good Executive Assistant. I was happy to learn that a lot of the concepts that this book recommends I already apply in my day to day. The book is nicely written, I like that is simulates a workbook and calls for action, similar to taking a class and having assignments to practice what you learn. Information is very organized, easy to comprehend, nicely presented, and ultimately I felt that the information is general to helping people lead a more successful life and doesn’t just apply to how to be an excellent Executive Assistant. Because of so, I would definitely recommend this to a friend or anyone just looking for self improvement. It is definitely a book for go-getters and a nice reminder to get us back on track if we were ever to loose sight or direction of our goals. Thank you Julie. ❤️

Must have read.
Great book for a career path acumen. Would even suggest reading for a curriculum read for students of all grades. Especially public schools.

solid 3 stars
I personally didn't find this book very interesting or helpful, for that matter, perhaps because I already employ many of the suggested techniques at work, but do not feel that they are particularly innovative, so I didn't feel there was much of the actual innovation covered in the book either. However, I see that it may help someone who has been in the industry for many many years and just needs to update their skills and approaches. It can also be helpful to someone who is just starting out. Also like Julie's passion and commend her on writing this book. If nothing else, I found the book as a helpful motivator to learn something new and I am now studying to take a professional certification exam relevant to my industry over the next few months. Yeah!

IT IS A MUST READ
Principles and suggestions from the 'Innovative Admin' greatly assisted me when tasked to visit and help the admin team in two of our remote offices. Not in one reading but I've read the whole book from cover to cover. I recommend it to those admin professionals who haven't read it to do so because it's a must read. It's simple in plain English and set out in such a way that it is easy and enjoyable to read. Many thanks Julie for your vast experience and insights which you've kindly and freely shared them with other admin professionals around the globe.

Nothing New At All
I was hoping this book would be more admin oriented, but it was more like a pep talk. If I wanted the information in this book I would just go straight to Zig Zigler or Les Brown. The information was general, but I was hoping to see more direct examples related to Administration/Office Manager. The author pointed out some good "motivational" resources, but again nothing in the area of being a stellar/innovative admin directly. Of course if you read the book it can help you over all, but if you really want to understand what it takes to be a good administrative queen/king you may want just straight out get Administrative Assistant's and Secretary's Handbook and use this book to simply cheer you on. I think the word "Admin" should be left out of the title and it should be titled "Being the Best You Can Be" or something generic like that. Nothing special or ground breaking in the admin world in this book at all, but it is a "nice" pick-you-up concept on paper. If it were marketed differently I would give it 3 stars, but because she brags about how good of an administrative professional she is I was hoping she would have shared some juicy office secrets with the readers. I'm giving it 2 stars because I think the title is misleading. Oh yeah! She has a nice website that seems to have more juicy stuff on it, but you have to pay to be a member, pay to be in on the webinar and such. I think this book was just a marketing tool and not really designed for admins. She throws in a couple of cool downloads to help you plan travel and stuff like that, but again it all funnel marketing to her paid programs. I wish her many blessings and continued prosperity, I just wished she would beef this book up more.

I like Julie's writing style
I will say what I said about another author's book - I am not a reader but this is an easy read. It moves along nicely. I like your style, Julie!!!! I am excited to read the other two books I purchased - "Become a Procedures Pro" and "The Organized Admin". Please keep writing these excellent books!! :-)

Very Very Helpful
Sometimes in your career you have to start rethinking about how you do things and find different ways to accomplish the same task. Julie Innovative Admin does that whether you are just starting out or reinventing yourself this book is very much a road map to do that plus Julie is pretty awesome person as one day I had an Admin Emergency and julie was readily available...so definately get this book even if you are not an admin this is a great resource for business owners too !

Useless
Not a massive fan of this book. It should really be called 'The Common Sense Admin' because it is quite literally a book of common sense things admin staff should be doing anyway. I was expecting a list of generic (and maybe some sector-specific) tasks that admin staff do with tips, tricks and hacks on how to do them efficiently (like, 'Ahhh, I never thought of that!' or, 'Ooohh, that's a good resource I never knew about') and to a good standard to make myself an almost-irreplaceable secretary/PA. This book didn't deliver. Chapters include getting into the right mindset, encouraging you to change your office space, start journaling... I do mindfulness, yoga and I journal already. I have a bullet journal and I scrapbook. Believe it or not, there's a chapter on how one needs to 'Tackle Technology'... There are not many admin staff left who learned to type on typewriters and are still beavering away in a corner clunking away at the keys. (Wonderful inventions, might I add.) Most admin staff are quite proficient with technology due to the RSA/OCR qualifications that are mandatory in most admin jobs. Not a useful book at all.
