Brutal, another success from Zahler.
I loved 'Bone Tomahawk' so needed to watch this made two years later.Totally different and even more violent than that odd western. Vince Vaughn is a good looking man but all that is sacrificed here for his role as a hard man, drug dealer and enforcer and it works with his shaven head and limited dialogue (limited but very effective and cultured).Starts as a thriller but then twists into horror mode in the deep dank prison wing of a heavy duty corrective prison. As in BT from a western town and desert to caves and primitive cave dwellers. The film is stunning but horribly gory in places. Dexter's sister, Jennifer Carpenter, Don Johnson and Udo Kier provide support but it's Mr Vaughn who runs away with the acting credits. The kind of role that Clint Eastwood would play in his worst nightmare. This edition includes English subtitles and a bonus feature.

Great violent film.
A brutal film starring Vince vaughn. An actor we are used to seeing in comedies suddenly plays the role of a hard nut drug runner after losing his job. Great convincing acting and story line. enjoyed this film highly even though in parts it shocked me with the level of graphical violence, but it shows that people are capable of doing crazy things to protect the persons dearest to them.Good ending as well. I would recommend this film to others but be aware that it is violent.

Entertaining
Very entertaining movie from start to finish. Unfortunately the paper slip that slips inside the transparent film had a round tear in it because of the cheapo plastic case it was in. Not Amazons fault just the makers cheaping out. I read a review saying this film was stupid and daft but you have to have an imagination like you do with most films. I mean everyone likes the avengers, superman, predator, and the terminator the list is endless. None of them films are going to happen but with alittle imagination all are very enjoyable just like this film it will never happen but great to watch.

Meh
Good to see Vaughn in a more serious role but the story was poor and struggled to keep attention. The graphics in fight seens were tragic, seen better from movies make in the 40s.It did make the film comical and did make me laugh so gave an extra star.Quite a forgetable film but was good to kill some time.

Blood, guts and Vaughn as you've never seen him.
If you're familiar with the director's (Zahler) previous work, then you'll know the formula. A slow paced, tension building story line that isn't shy to take it's time in fleshing out the characters (some action fans may find that boring, but personally, I love it) building up to a brutal and over the top bloody climax. This formula worked in Bone Tomahawk, and it works just as well here. We get an hour or so of what seems to be a pretty serious drama, followed by a somewhat over the top shoot out, a humorous and comically violent escalation through the prison system, and a completely blood splattering, gore fest of an ending, yet because of the character development of the first hour and a half, still managed to leave me with a lump in my throat and tear in my eye because I cared about these a$$holes.Love it or hate it movie by a love him or hate him director. As a movie it's all over the place, yet fits so perfectly. Best acting I've ever seen from Vince, and I hope his upcoming movie with this director (dragged across the concrete) is half as good as this.Love it, love it, love it.

Extremely Dumb Movie
If you were looking forward to this one after being hugely impressed by director S.Craig Zahler's previous movie Bone Tomahawk, you might be considerably disappointed, as I was, although plenty of viewers apparently don't see much wrong with it. How Zahler went from making a magnificent modern classic like Tomahawk to the bone headed stupidity of Cell Block 99 is a mystery for the ages. Everything that was great about BT is horribly wrong with BICB99. The former has Kurt Russell, Patrick Wilson, Richard Jenkins and Matthew Fox, all at the top of their considerable game, while the latter has Vince Vaughan and Don Johnson doing their best with very weak material, which unfortunately isn't all that much; the former has an evidently lovingly honed script with dazzling dialogue that actors love to deliver, while the latter's is just lame (example: She: "How was work"? He: "Yes it was.") BT has an infamous scene where (*SPOILER ALERT!!*) a naked man is bifurcated upside down with an axe (actually the bone tomahawk of the title) and it looks (and sounds) so horrifically real that you believe you could be watching a snuff movie, but the special effects in BICB99 are comically inept, as well as the injuries they depict being ludicrously implausible and over exaggerated. Also the fight scenes are choreographed so slowly and deliberately they are a curiosity in themselves. I've certainly never seen such a strange film before, where you can't tell whether the director is playing a practical joke on his audience or is just on some really bad drugs. Much of it seems to have a blue filter on it. The story opens with the protagonist getting fired from work then going home and discovering his wife has been having an affair, so he vandalizes their car, then a caption appears which reads "Eighteen months later". These earlier events have no bearing on the remainder of the film. Most peculiar, mama!

Amazing cast of actors but could have been better directed or cut.
Was looking forward to watching this movie, mainly due to the outstanding cast, but, other than the very graphic fight scenes it was poorly directed, some scenes went on way too long, like when you watch an A rated movie cut scenes and see why they were cut from the movie, unfortunately this movie would have been very short and all violence if that happened here, lol.
