The Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker: More Than a Tanker

Great Book
I initially passed on this book because prior to it being published it was being touted as an updated version of the old Aerofax book. I remember seeing the Aerofax book when it was published and I passed on it as it did not seem that impressive. So when this book came out I again initially passed on it. After reading all the 5 star reviews I decided to go ahead and purchase it. Although I have yet to read the book just looking it over it is an impressive piece of work with great photographs, individual aircraft histories, attrition, etc. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know all about the 135 series. Good job Mr. Hopkins.

Outstanding Book !!!
As in all the previous KC-135 books I've seen from Hopkins, his expertise shows through - and this one has a TON of information that I hadn't seen before. Add to that excellent photos that the author has obtained from a variety of sources and you got yourself one superlative KC-135 book. Worth every penny !!!

More than a simple KC-135 book
More than a simple KC-135 book, this is probably the best single book I've encountered devoted to a single aircraft, let alone the KC-135. I flew the KC-135 from 1986 to 2013, so I think I am pretty familiar with the aircraft, but even picking a section at random and reading I invariably learned things I didn't know - it is hard to imagine a more comprehensive volume. The author was a KC/RC-135 pilot, so he has credibility as well as the background to know what questions to ask during his research. My only quibble, and it is minor, is that some of the systems description (e.g., flight controls) could have been more engineering based. For example, the KC-135 outboard ailerons are locked out at high speed (as they are many later jet transport aircraft), not to avoid over control, but reduce structural weight that would be required to keep the wing from twisting opposite the aileron deflection at high speed. My only hope, with the USAF planning to operate the KC-135 for another 25 years, that there is a follow on volume that recounts the KC-135's operations yet to come as comprehensively as Lt Col Hopkins has done with this volume. I purchased the hardcover version; it is a well constructed book. Mine was sent in an unpadded envelope and sustained minor crushing to the cover jacket.

Buy this Book
As an active 135 crewmember, I can say with comfortable certainly- this is the best source of Stratotanker information. This source often reads more clearly that operating/maintenance publications in terms of technical data. The research and legwork put into the historical piece of this book is unmatched.

Book has great overall info on the 60 year * history
Just got the book (based on info from a 135 crew chief). Book has great overall info on the 60 year * history. very detailed and concentrated on public history of each plane. Book has great pictures (missing one of Offutt flight line with all RC's and EC's lined up-hung at ops and in hanger Maint during the late 60's) I was disappointed in the lack of information covering 55th SRW (66-72), maybe it's still not released.Overall its a good read and would be a real eye opener to ones not involved

The very best book I've ever seen on such an important and long serving aircraft.
I've always rather liked the Boeing KC-135 series of military aircraft, direct developments of the iconic Boeing 707 airliner. In service for the whole lifetimes of many of us, (first flight 1956!) this aircraft has fulfilled so many roles that kept the 'Cold War' from ever warming up too much. Still very much at the 'sharp end' and looking at being in service at least until the middle of the 21st Century.Dr Robert Hopkins III flew many variants of this aircraft in the USAF, however it is his research and ability to compile a fascinating and authoritative book that deserves the utmost credit here. This book is stunning in so many ways, the use of a lot of colour photographs and diagrams, combined with readable text just make it a joy to peruse. If you have a passing interest in the KC-135 and all its spin off types, please just buy this book, a better one will not be written in the next 20 years or so...if ever!*Please note, this review is the 2016 updated version, the cheaper paperback version on Amazon is from 1998 and less detailed.

Large book but disappointed cellophane cover was damaged.
Bought as a gift so was a little disappointed to find the cellophane cover was torn and damaged., Hence 4 stars rather than 5 stars given.Had to remove the cellophane before wrapping up . Luckily the book itself was not affected but as it was new, and a gift, the cover intact would have been better. This book was bought via Book Depositiry, who I have dealt with many times, they always give a good price and prompt delivery. Cannot comment on the actual book as it is not for me.
