DC Comics Batman: Earth One Vol. 3

A dent in the plans
Third volume in the series 'Batman: Earth one.' Earth are Dc comics stories that do fresh takes on existing characters, free of all previous continuity. This one does follow on from events in the first two, so you would be better off reading those first rather than trying it as a jumping on point. There is violence and one or two bits of mild language, so it's better for those aged teen and up rather than younger readers. It's one long story, running one hundred and sixty pages. Art once again by Gary Frank and Jon Sibal, who did the art for the first two volumes. The art is again really great and clear and lifelike. The colouring by Brad Anderson is also superb. Is Harvey Dent dead? Supposedly. But weapons are flooding into the city, and people saying they're coming from him. Bruce has to balance his vigilante life and building a new base with this issue. Plus there's his relationship with Harvey's sister. There's also a woman dressed like a cheshire cat....It has been over five years since book two, so a bit of refresher at the beginning would have been handy. But even so you do get back into it easily. Although some referenced details from the earlier volumes didn't really come back to me.At 160 pages you would think it would be a long read, but it does zip along very nicely with the pages turning quickly. The supporting cast are great. It using one established rogue in a rather different way, which I really liked. Catwoman's costume does take a bit of getting used to. But even though they go through rather familiar beats, there is something very appealing about this version. The main plot is really good. It's not one where it's easy to see where things are going. And it did wrongfoot me. When I didn't think it would. So that was nice. This is very much at attempt at realistic Batman, and that is also a good plus point. The ending does though feel like one of those wrap it all up quickly but leave the door open for more just in case endings you do get from things from time to time. So that does stop it from being a five star work. It's not clear if will ever get a volume four, so so it goes. Not quite five stars, but a good entry in a solid series. There's a couple of pages of art gallery right at the back.

Families
I have not been a big fan of the Batman Earth One books. Yet I still keep coming back. In fairness they are do get slightly better every book. The story in this one is my favourite of the 3 books so far, the artwork is awesome. My main problem with the books is Batman here seems too inexperienced, too naive and continually needing saving or help from others. This is a good book, but it definitely setup book 4. There is not way the can leave the story there after that last page. This book is all about family, the coming together of the bat family, and the Wayne/Arkham family secrets.

Wow! Please say we're getting a volume 4
Batman earth one vol 3 was a fantastic ride. Its story keeps you guessing with certain plot threads and throws in some really nice surprises throughout. I loved seeing batman lore characters in a different take similar to the first two volumes. One of my favourite dynamics was the inclusion of Waylan Jones working alongside Batman. Its just awesome! The story is brilliant, the art, inks and colours are perfect for this story and the last 5 pages (especially the last one!) Will drive you insane and make you want a volume 4. What Johns, Frank and Anderson have done with Batman earth one trilogy is nothing short of outstanding and I really hope and pray we get more from this incredible creative team in a volume 4! 10/10

Excellent continuation of a great series
I really like the Earth One interpretation of Batman and volume 3 in the series continues to impress. I really enjoyed it but the ending feels a bit rushed, do four stars instead of 5.
