this is a great mid upper cost kit
I was very happy with this kit overall. This was my first foray into kits over $10 a set. For years I had been getting the slimline and cheaper cigar style kits. This kit definitely makes some nice pens. I do like the magnetic posting cap. I had tried a classic rollerball kit years ago that used plastic threads for the cap posting, and those plastic threads got chewed up really quickly, which is one reason why I stayed away from these kits until I found this one that is magnetic - I don't need to worry about any threads. My slight nitpick with this is that to keep costs down, they give sleeves for the trimming mill. They work, but they aren't great. It was good enough to get me through these three kits, and when I decided I liked this style and bought more similar ones based on the same tubes and bushings(the magnetic graduate pen kits), I also bought the matching whiteside pen mills (10.5mm and 12.5mm). It does add significantly to the cost since I also get new cutter heads along with the pilot mill, but once you have them, you are set.My biggest complaint is actually with the refill. They come with a Schneider Topball 850, and I am just not a big fan of how it writes, it tends to skip on me and also glob a bit. After doing some research, I tried the Pentel Energel .5mm needle point, it fits in the pen, and it writes without skipping and dries quickly to reduce smearing, and is also one of the cheaper rollerball refills out there.I don't know how these compare to the really high end kits, but I've been quite happy with the performance. After changing the refill and getting the matching pen mills, it makes making these kits and writing with the pens that much better, and if you plan on making more than just these three, I'd also recommend you upgrade to the proper mills and change out the refills.
