One More Horizon: The Inspiring Story of One Man's Solo Journey Around the World on a Mountain Bike

I extremely rarely give five star reviews, but I had to give it to this book. Well written, extremely unique travel book. Twenty five years ago the author basically hopped on a mountain bike in Ohio, rode to NYC and hopped on a plane to Scandinavia (chosen because it was the cheapest flight to Europe he could find). There the adventure begins. Solo riding his bike down Europe, into Africa and across the Sahara (mid summer no less), and on, ending up in Hong Kong where the last of his $5,000 bankroll was used up.The trip was roughly 25 years ago and he traveled across places like Syria, the frontier lands of Pakistan, etc.-places no American outside of the military could go today. It's truly amazing he didn't die several times during this ride. Many, many times he was helped out by the poorest of the poor in countries we now consider hostile.In the forward the author links to his website where some of the pictures from his trip can be found. I definitely suggest following along with those pictures as you read.The book is very well written and documents a truly stupendous adventure that probably can never be repeated.

It’s an interesting books and the writing is good. There’s a lot of wonder and beauty and joy. But there’s an awful lot of suffering. At times it feels gratuitous. But I admire the author’s perseverance. It inspires me to get out of my comfort zone and take more risks. Without meaning to, the book has a bit of. “how not to do it” message to it. It certainly had that effect on me. So much of the struggle, it seems, could have been avoided with better planning and/or better resources. For example, early in his trip he crosses North Africa and large chunks of the Sahara in July! A 2-3 month later start would have made that stretch a lot more enjoyable and less life-threatening. Despite all that, it was an enjoyable read and inspiring too.

I am a reader of bicycle touring books. I enjoy being taken on the ride with the authors. Scott Zamek captured the spirit of adventure and endurance while overcoming adversity behind his handlebars. His story is very well written and is a must read for those who want a first hand account of a person immersing himself in the people, culture, and the journey with a determination to learn and grow. I especially am taken by his view of what touring by bicycle is. The follow sentences from the book is an accurate view of what touring by bicycle is that I share."On a train, one is doomed to go only where travelers go. where do guys like Scott get the courage to travel like this. The uncertainty of food , shelter, water would drive me crazy! This is a great book about biking filled with danger, privation , and close calls. But it has provided him a life of memories nd stories . And he tells them well. Read it, might change your life.

I love true life adventure tails but this one left me wanting. The writer left out so much of his adventure including hiking in Nepal and most of Europe. He seemed to push himself and put himself in mortal danger, biking in the desert during the summer, when there wasn't really a need. He had a great adventure but I felt the book could have been much better.

What an amazing adventure and well ridden. Having read a few accounts of the silk road this one was all the more interesting as it recounts the personal trials and tribulations. Indeed there is one more horizon and we should all be seeking the next one. I found this book a great balance between a personal journey, vivid descriptions of the environment and journey and good character development of people met along the way. I would have like more about the bike other than bright yellow with dodgy wheels. Photos would also have helped.

Having read many books about long distance travel by bicycle, this one stands out. Author Scott Zamek paints his story with a rich palette of words, captivating the reader and never loosens the binds, the only disappointment being what every good read brings, an end to the story. Easily one of the best stories of a bicycle vagabond I have read.

I wasn't sure I would finish the book, but everyday I read more and found it hard to put down.Thanks Scott, for making my life more enjoyable.Ken Carlson

As a cyclist, I was looking for some cycling related books and that's where I came upon this book and found interesting...I decided to read it and I am really satisfied with my option.Hats off to the author who dared to travel the world on the cycle with himself as the engine. That too in preInternet and cellphone times.I recommend this book to all ....I feel u guys would also like the author's pure experiences in different countries and could use it as a guide if anyone wants to try it out.

Any book that highlights the good deeds people inflict on others has to be a great thing. In a world of evil it is always warming to know that good thoughts and kind actions outweigh the bad. Well done for living and articulating this. Even better, setting this out as an interesting and inspiring diary is an amazing feat.

5 stars, not for trick cycling, but for living raw and hard. Despite having been treated shabbily by others, there remains a gravitational pull towards positivity and better days, better people.

Far to uncomfortable for me but what a trip! Enjoyed the route dictated by finance and international disruption. Envious you were one of the last people to get an Algerian visa and it still not possible to get one in 2017 from Morocco. Morocco is an exasperating place yet fascinating in many aspects. I can also sympathised with the culture and lifestyle in India, loved it. Sorry your UK visit was cut short by rain. Hope you have visited since, it's a great place honest!

Awesome book and intefresting read. I wish i had Scotts courage to travel like he did, but i have become a prisoner to the daily grind of work and mortgages.
