I believe it is made of a type of flexible, insulative plastic foam. Will work fine on water pipes, gas lines...but I wouldn't use it on steam pipes. I don't think it's extreme heat or flame resistant.

No,they’re not really thin. And yes, they’re bendable. Maybe 1/2” thick

do these retain their shape if you are sitting on them (put around a 5 gallon bucket as a makeshift toilet seat)?

I am sure it depends on how much weight and for how long you sit. I would perhaps be more concerned as to how well they will stay in place as you "do your business".

Can these be used as protection over an iron bed to prevent my toddler from hitting his head?

I made a fabric cover to prevent biting pieces off and it worked great!
