Q: Does the pump prevent flow when not running? Not just a check valve to prevent back flow, but a complete isolation between the hot/cold lines.

I'm not sure if there's complete isolation, but keep in mind that the pump creates a side-chain to the flow of water from supply to outlet, so when it's not pumping, the natural flow (on both H & C sides) is going to bypass the pump and do very little intermixing, even if there's not perfect isolation. Hope that helps.

Q: Is this compatible with Ranni tankless lol water heater

I do not know why it would not work with a tankless water heater, and plan to try this device. We have a tankless water heater in our attic, and in winter we will run the downstairs kitchen sink hot tap for literally minutes in order to get all the standing cold water in the pipes to flush down the drain so that the hot water from the attic finally arrives at the kitchen sink tap. Assuming that this pump comes on every 15 minutes [four times an hour] and runs three or four minutes until the hot water gets to the sink tap and gets the volume of water in the many feet of piping to the kitchen sink replaced with hot water, the next time we actually want hot water, the pipes should hopefully be filled with maybe room-temperature water instead of 40-or-50-degree-F water. When we run our dishwasher, the kitchen sink's hot water tap will start getting hot water within 10 seconds if we turn it on within 20 or so minutes after the dishwasher has completed its washing cycle that uses hot water. Bottom line, when we open the tap after this device is installed and running, we should immediately be getting hopefully at least room-temperature water instead of 40-50degree water, followed by the tankless-heated-water in another few seconds, because when the tankless water heater kicks on the metal copper piping won't need to be heated from perhaps near-freezing.

Yes this is a circulating pump to get hot water to the valves without having to run water down the drains
