Very impressed
I immediately sliced some potatoes and they were a success. (I just boiled them but because they were thinly sliced somehow they looked much more attractive on the plate - more appetising - and of course cooked quickly.) The clever holder actually doubles as a lemon squeezer ... but has plastic 'spikes' underneath which you use to hold the food in place while you slice. As long as you always do that, no risk of injury to your fingers. To slice an onion you need to cut it in half first or it slips about. The onion slices were much thinner than I would manage with a knife, so cooked quickly and evenly - very pleased. The leaflet is all in German, so I looked up translations on the internet. The slicer can't go in the dishwasher, and as soon as you've used it you need to swish it under the tap - lukewarm or cold water, it says. I didn't wash it till the next day but it was still easy to clean - just remember not to put fingers anywhere near the very sharp blade! (and definitely keep miles away from children!!!) I am impressed, and imagine I'll be using it most days. I would definitely recommend. Worth spending more for the sake of your fingers!

Amazing, uncomplicated and effective
I bought this to replace my previous TNS mandolin which at at about 26 years old was beginning to show its age, although the blade remains as sharp as day 1! Without needing any fiddly extras this will slice, from super thin to thick, make matchsticks again of varying thickness and dice. And it comes with a juicing attachment! A very useful piece of equipment no kitchen should be without

Good kitchen gadget
Took a bit of getting used to but now cracked it. I was pressing down on the holder far too hard and it wasn't cutting properly. With a lighter touch it cuts well. There should be better instructions with it though, which would help a lot. They were very basic. Overall happy with the cutter, but wouldn't say it's brilliant. Perhaps I was expecting miracles.

My favourite slicer
I bought this because my mum has the 2000 model of this slicer and after almost a decade of using, it's still in great shape.I am very happy with this mandolin/julienne slicer, the blades are very sharp (so gotta be careful slicing vegetables like carrots). It has many thickness selections, not too many wideness selections though (only 3).Overall, I would recommend this slicer to everyone as I really love this purchase.

Problems with making julienne
I bought this vegetable mandolin after reading the above 5-star comments. The test for any mandolin is julienning as almost any such device can slice pretty well. If you want your julienne to have a square cross section (by using the finest julienne cutter and setting the slice cutting blade at step 4 or 5), you'll see the vegetable, say carrot, is scored much deeper than the blade can cut off, so at the next cutting, the vegetable will be scored again and most likely at a different direction and in differnt places. As a result, what you get is irregularly cut shreds rather than uniform strips with a square cross section. Another problem is that the part of the mandolin body behind the slicing blade is too short, so when you julienne rather hard vegetable, such as carrot, you have to use greater force to push the holder, and you tend to overshoot off the mandolin and have to reassemble the holder and vegetable, greatly slowing down the process. I have some ideas to solve the first problem but it would be too long to write about them here. If the manufacturer is interested in them, they may contact me and I'd give them entirely free. The second problem is, of course, very easy to solve if other users and the manufacturer also think it's a problem.
