Does this require fertilizer? is it ok if i don’t use fertilizer? and is it ok if i keep it close to a window or getting sunlight outside for hours?

Hi there!

All plants need to be fertilized when kept in a controlled environment; otherwise, the soil will become deficient, and the plant will have nothing to convert to energy. Think of it as a bowl of soup; you take a few bites and add water to make it look full again. You take a few more bites and then add more water. Eventually, it will be all water and no soup and of little to no nutrient value. Without adding sustenance, they'll be living on water alone.

It's better to keep these bonsai indoors where they can have a temperature-controlled environment. When they're tiny, they need a little bit of sheltering until they can grow big and strong. It is imperative to allow them as much natural light as possible, 8 hours or more!

When do you repot the seedling?

Hey Carl! Your bonsai tree sprouts will be good to grow in the small pots included with the kit for up to a year. You want to make sure that your trees are strong enough before repotting for better chances of survival. The best time to repot is in late winter, right before spring! I hope that this helps. I live in hardiness zone 4, will I be able to grow all four varieties of trees included in this product?

Hello!

Our Bonsai Seed Kit is geared towards indoor growing, so weather should not be an issue for you. The Brazilian Rosewood and Flame Tree do, however, need a hotter temperature soil to sprout, so you may want to either wait until summer when there isn't a chance of cold drafts coming in or invest in a heating mat for your seeds. Otherwise, there should be no problem growing them for indoor enjoyment!

Are there instructions on for each tree (stratification, scarification, etc.) ?

Hi there! The stratification method that we've found to be the easiest is to soak all of the seeds in hot water for 16-24 hours and then plant immediately into moist, not overly wet, nutrient-rich soil. For the Delonix Regia seeds, you can either clip the rounded end of the seed or use a piece of sandpaper to sand down the rounded end prior to soaking. This will help increase the chances of germination by removing the outer layer of the seed so the sprout can emerge easily. There are a ton of different stratification methods out there, so you can also do a bit of research before planting your seeds to see what works best for you. You could even apply different methods to the seeds to see which ones yield the best results! The most important factor for successful germination is to keep the soil warm and moist during the germination periods, which will be listed on the back of each seed packet.
