I've been using it 4 times a day for the last 8 months. It could not be better. The locking ring is secure and does not move.The metal contact surfaces are very polished so the coffee does not stick.When I bought my espresso machine I found that the machine was difficult to dial in consistently because each family member tamped their coffee differently.This normcore tool corrected that by assuring each puck had the same density regardless of who was preparing the coffee. The espresso machine dial in then worked perfectly regardless of the family member making coffee.A must have tool. The combined distributor/tamper.

This is a neat 2-in-1 tool. Is it a gimmick? I guess that depends on how fussy you are about your puck prep. But if you're like me and enjoy tweaking and zeroing out variables, it's a potential game changer.I use the levelling tool on all my pucks, whether it's my specialty coffee for my morning espresso shots or on the supermarket espresso I use for my afternoon milk drinks.The difference is that I use a spring loaded tamper for the specialty coffee—to make sure it's tightly and consistently packed when using an IMS basket and naked portafilter—but not for my supermarket espresso grind, which goes into a dual walled/pressurised basket.Instead, I set the tamping side of the tool to mirror the depth Breville recommends—i.e. I set it to the depth of their "trim tool" plus a little more—which is really about as much tamping as you need for commodity coffee in a pressurised basket. It works a treat!My only gripe is that the rim around the leveller does fill up with coffee during the levelling process, so I keep a little brush to sweep it out each time, to avoid any old grounds getting into the tomorrow's shot… It's hard to know how you would design it differently to mitigate this though.

On the one end you have a terrific distributor (which is depth adjustable) and on the other end you have a tamper (which is separately depth adjustable). Both sides have height markings so you can lock in exactly the depth you want.Heavy and heavy duty. Just feels like quality in the hand. I dumped my other hand tamper as this is simple, minimalist solution that’s very effective.

This combo distributor and tamper is very high quality and the depth is highly adjustable with professional-looking measurement markings on both sides. I also like that it came with a rubber base to hold it on the counter and that there are no exposed threads to avoid collecting loose coffee grounds.I dropped my rating by one star since coffee grounds stick around the side of the distribution tool as it’s smaller than the 54mm portafilter. In addition, I would like it even more if the distributor side could be adjusted to be a bit more shallow and the sides had a rough edge to provide more grip.
