Wish I had found this years ago!
OK, let's try it out. Dense hedge of black bamboo. I want to take a piece out to plant in my son's garden. (I did try this years ago and gave it up as impossible; the roots were just too dense and I couldn't separate a clump - I couldn't get under the roots without removing decking.) Pushed the shovel in to make a circle the size of the pot I was going to use - lovely crunchy sound as the shovel cut through the roots like butter. Tried levering the clump with the shovel but nothing happened (seeing the number of bent shovels in other reviews I'm glad I didn't exert more pressure). Pushed a fork in the side of the clump, pushed down, bit of effort needed, but out it popped and went straight into the waiting flower pot. Roots were about 40 cm deep and I would suggest making sure they are all cut before trying to remove. So that was my first try and it worked like a charm. I love herbaceous plants and have always had them in my garden. After a few years they form dense clumps which I have had to dig up and split using two forks - very heavy work if the clumps are mature, weighing 20kg or more. I haven't used it on herbaceous plants yet but after my success with the bamboo, I think it will be a piece of cake to remove the tired old centre of these plants or dig out manageable clumps to replant. We have just been removing tired old shrubs and great clumps of herbaceous plants from the garden in my son's new home, so, as I said, I wish I had found this tool years ago; things would have been much easier. I am very pleased with this root assassin (love the name!) and look forward to it making maintaining my garden easier in the future.

Does the job well. Nice and sharp.
Easily cuts through small and medium roots. Makes removing annoying shrubs with tap roots a breeze. It is important to use it properly. It is in effect an underground saw. It is NOT for levering or lifting huge loads. It is a narrow tool and consequently not strong enough for that. Used in conjunction with a big shovel or fork is perfect for the job.

Wish I had bought this years ago.
This shovel has transformed my garden which is full of deep rooted plants and saplings. It gets down deep enough to root out saplings coming from tree runners and cuts into the thicker roots enabling me to get a purchase and to pull roots back towards the original trees and manage growth. I am a senior citizen and only five feet tall....the shoval is light enough for me to manage a good hours work on the toughest roots. Highly recommend.

Top choice for gardening
I initially bought it for metal detecting. Well, it will be super for when using regular detectors but, when using very deep detectors (like Detech Relic Striker or Minelab GPX), its all-metal construction will be an impediment. Detectorists will understand what I mean. Then I "transferred" it to the gardening sector. It shines there! It does exactly what the manufacturer promises and even more. Very effective in all ways and really sturdy. This is why it fully deserves the 5 stars rating. Definitely!

Makes the job easier
Was a bit worried by some of the reviews but it made my job so easy. I had to dig up a very mature bamboo plant and it cut through the roots very easilyVery happy with the results

No deep-rooted weed is safe!
I bought this to take out a troublesome small tree stump but find it is the perfect answer to pesky tap rooted docks that seem to go down metres! The do give up when attacked with the root assassin which is lucky as my new allotment was going for the world record in dock growing. Oh, and it cut its way through the tree roots with ease which was the original aim.
