Yes it breaks down easily. I transported it to France in the car, just had to drop the seats

I can see what you are trying to do, I do not think that it would go high enough when tilted at 90 degrees to get the panels into the slots, another problem would be that if there was a bottom rail then the castors will prevent the lifter getting close enough to the posts.
