Best Blu Ray of an epic?
I long to see El Cid in all it's 70mm glory, but for now we have to make do with an inferior transfer that is only slightly better than the DVD. While this other Bronston movie is not the greatest of epic movies, but it does have a lot of spectacle to offer, and this Blu Ray is streets ahead of most other Blu Ray releases. It looks astonishing, displaying what the fuss about 70mm was. Beautiful compositions, wonderful costumes and location work [Spain] all polished to their best for the production, and the colours pop out of the screen to make one gasp with pleasure. For me this is the one to show people why they should update to Blu Ray from DVD. Beautiful transfer, done with a lot of care and attention. If only the other Bronston epics were done in the same way.

film of films
Over 2hours of the retelling of the birth, the life, the death and ressurrection of Jesus Christ. Jeffrey Hunter plays the Nazarene very charismatically. The film is beautiful to watch with its lavish costumes and settings. I would say the most moving part of the film is the reenactment of the sermon on the mount, simple but moving and perhaps life changing words. The film takes you through the foretelling of HIS coming, to Herods murderous spree of first born sons, the infamous dance performed by Salome for her stepfather, the beheading of John the baptist, the baptism of Christ, the temptation of Christ, the Last Supper, the guilt-ridden suicide of judas Iscariot and the trial in which Barrabas is spared by the people. I would say it is one of the best films about Jesus Christ and well worth having in your film collection, whether you're a believer or not.

I liked that it covered from before Jesus’ birth to after his resurrection

A excellent biblical films I have seen
A excellent biblical films I have seen. It goes in great detail about the life of Jesus from his birth and him walking through the desert and where Satan tries to tempt him but fails to final days of his life. One of the other reason that this is a good film is that it not only focuses on him but also people such as John of Baptist and King Herod and Judas and also Barabbas and his ill thought out attempt to overthrow the rule of Herod and his Rome masters such as Ponteix Pilate. I would recommend this film because it is well acted and also well researched and it main strength is it does not make it all about Christ but about his times and also the people around at that time I would recommend.

A bit of a plod
First of all, this blu-ray looks great and is an excellent restoration of the film. But I found the film (which was new to me) rather disappointing. For me, it did not really reach heights of inspiration and is not in the same class as, for example, Quo Vadis, the Ten Commandments and Ben Hur, which are all wonderful. There are fine moments such as the sermon on the mount and salome's dance, but for the most part the film just plods. Jeff Hunter is excellent as Jesus but this is not enough to raise the film above the average. Considering the director was Nicholas Ray I was surprised at the pedestrian result. If you already know and love this film then buy it, otherwise proceed with caution.
