Cable Tracker Works Well
Out of 4 light switches at the entrance to my kitchen, 1 was totally a mystery as to what it controlled. I shut off the breaker to all 4 switches, unscrewed this switch, and pulled it out a couple of inches from the wall. With the switch in the off position, I attached the positive of this tester to the output wire, and I attached the negative (ground) to the green ground screw. I easily tracked the signal ,from the transmitter, up the wall, over to the large kitchen opening, and then over to the center of the kitchen ceiling where there is nothing attached; only a finished ceiling there. Apparently, when this house was built, there was a plan to install some kind of light there. This Tool was easy to use, and the light, emitted from its front, closely pointed to where the signal was coming from the wire inside the wall. And, holding the receiver 2 to 3 feet away from the wall, I could still get a good reading.

It's cheap but it's cheap
It's $18. Super cheaply made but functional. Perfect for entry level and/or light duty use. If you think you'll need it often, shift your budget higher or be ready to upgrade soon. Solid recommendation as a basic wire tracer.

Cheap, maybe for casual use - no batteries
Made from the cheapest plastic ever! Thin and ill fitting ie battery compartment. Harbor Freight (tm) or even Dollar Stores have better quality. In addition, Package slip claims it comes with 2x 9V batteries, it does not. There are surprisingly some more extensive fotocopied instructions on how to use the tool(s), so that’s a plus, but they too are not always clear. Lastly, the pouch is oddly constructed, it has a sleeve for the instructions but they fit upside down, prone to slip out quickly.Disappointed before even giving it the test run.2 STARS, -> (*RATE SCALE*: 5=perfect; 4=minor imperfections; 3=on fence; not sure if I’d buy again; 2= too many problems; 1= shouldn’t be sold or is dangerous).

Essential part of my Toolkit
As a dad who's also a bit of a tech enthusiast, I've had my fair share of "lost in the cable jungle" moments. Whether it's setting up a home theater or troubleshooting the family's internet connection, cables are always a challenge. That's why this cable tracing tool has been a lifesaver.First off, this tool is like a digital compass for cables. It's helped me effortlessly trace Ethernet cables, telephone lines, and even those pesky wires hidden within walls. It's turned what used to be a frustrating chore into almost a game—find the cable, no sweat! Now, let's talk about the features. This isn't just a one-trick pony; it's got a range of functionalities that have come in handy. From checking network cable sequences to circuit status testing, it's got it all. And the LED illumination is a nice touch, especially for those hard-to-see spots.A quick word of caution—this tool isn't designed for high-voltage power lines, so be mindful of that. But for everything else, it's been fantastic. In summary, this cable tracing tool has been a game-changer for my home tech projects. It's made finding and testing cables a breeze, and it's become an essential part of my toolkit. If you're tired of playing hide-and-seek with your cables, this tool is a must-have.

This is even good for home use to track down all those cables running to your On-Q panel
This is the first house I have had that is nicely wired with network to many rooms. I now need to track them down and label them. I had access to these tools 20+ years ago when I worked for a small IT company. They haven't changed that much but they are now smaller.I like that the signal can either be an alternating tone, or a solid tone. I also like that everything fits into a single pouch. I do wish that the battery compartment was slightly different because it makes you think you can insert the battery one way but the wires are just a millimeter too short and switching it around you have to be careful not to catch the wire on the cover when closing it.I tested the system with provided cables as well as a new Cat6 cable I ordered. Both worked well with one exception. The RJ11 cable got stuck in the Cable Scan/Test emitter. It took many minutes, and I was worried that I'd break it trying to get the cable unplugged. Thankfully, I don't have any phone cables/jacks in my house, so that's not a big deal for me.The flashlight end is a bonus. The old unit I used in the past did not have this feature, and when climbing in ceilings, and tight areas with minimal lighting, this is helpful. The headphones? You are probably like me and have nearly a dozen headphones laying around from all those old Cellphones you have had. These sound like there's a marble rolling around inside then. But for my needs, I won't even need to use headphones, so that's no big deal either.Bottom line, if you don't need this for Land lines, or fax lines, this is worth getting. If you need the RJ11 connector, be careful. Mine got stuck. Yours may not, but just be careful.

Works intermittently, overall quality seems poor.
This set of cable/data/communications line finders may be okay for very light and non-critical use.The overall quality seems poor and they don't always work. You may be better off looking for better quality for more serious use.I will update this review if needed based on further experience.

excellent tone tracer and wand combo
For contract computer technician gigs, basic network tools are often needed to test a cable, find the port on the patch panel, or directly connect to a router using a reverse cable. The cost of the item is low enough to have a back up for sharing with another technician on a large project. The features are impressive and the functionality matches or exceeds a high-dollar Fluke that was used at university in the late 1990's and early 2000's. This tool is a must have for the computer technician toolkit. Recommended.
