Q: Can you put a shovel on it?

Yeah, it has all the pockets and places to put your shovel and probe. It looks small but there is plenty of room for a day ride.

I use it for snowmobiling, primarily, so I carry water on the inside. The small side pockets are too small for a water bottle; I think the design is more to fit a probe pole or the disconnected end of a shovel handle. The side mesh would be a tight squeeze for a small-diameter water bottle; it's more for allowing a little stretch in the shovel space between the back-lower compartment and the main compartment. . A camelback bladder may fit in the internal flat pocket, which is about 9"w X 16"h. (I carry an emergency tarp, SAM splint, and a mega warmer in that pocket.). If I use this pack in the summer, I sometimes clip my large Nalgene bottle to the outside.
