World Explorer: good flavour, good for inspiration, weak on value
I’m reviewing the ‘World Explorer’ set here, though when you start looking at what flavours are included, it quickly starts to feel less exotic and more familiar, with almost all the flavours ones we’d recognise from common sauce or spice brands in our local supermarket. It’s important to think of this as a set of spices with some recipes, rather than complete meal kits. Each recipe requires quite a few ingredients that couldn’t be included in the box- not just the protein and generally quite a lot of different vegetables, but in some cases cream and other items which you might not have thought of or stocked up on before you read the recipe card. So it’s not so well suited to impulsive, “let’s have this one tonight” meal planning, and needs some forethought. The spices are a good quality, rich and powerful, and give a good aroma. I can’t really fault the spices themselves, which give flavours that feel authentic, recognisable, and a bit more nuanced than the microwave ready meal equivalents of each flavour. This set is entirely marked as ‘medium’ for spice strength, though I’d describe some of them as mild rather than medium- the katsu curry in particular. None of them are ‘hot’ though, ‘medium’ is definitely as far as it goes, which suits me fine. For the current asking price of sixteen quid for a few bags of spices, this set struggles for value, and the menu items on offer aren’t novel or distinctive enough to make this a real round-the-world taste adventure. But the recipes are easy to follow and a good prompt for some relatively easy-to-cook, tasty meals.

tasty food from around the world
The media could not be loaded. This Spicentice World Food Explorer Recipe & Spice Gift Set arrived beautifully packed in box. I am really impressed with the packaging, it’s so beautiful and also makes the perfect gift for anyone because they can try out new recipes and eat food from around the world. The best thing is that the recipes include the instructions but most importantly the spices. Spices and especially the quantity is the most important thing in the dish wish makes the flavour. All you need to do is buy and add the ingredients and prepare the food. The box contains very delicious recipes each from different countries such as greek souvlaki, thai red curry, tikke masala, spanish paella, etc.The dishes are full of flavour and very delicious.highly recommended

Too expensive for students
It's a nice idea - you premix spices and put them in a package with a recipe that helps students be more adventurous rather than just ordering a takeaway. But at £2.50 per 16g spice kit, it is way too expensive. Students would be better going online for the recipes and getting in a few spices from the local Indian corner shop.I have just tried the tikka masala recipe kit. Since I am an experienced cook, I adapted it. I found it too complicated - it wanted you to marinade and grill your chicken chunks. So I went for marinade and frying up with an onion. It wanted you to put in half a can of chopped tomatoes - obviously I chucked in the whole can. It wanted you to add a small quantity of cream - obviously I chucked in the left-over plain yogurt from the fridge. And then added the scrapings from a mango and a lime chutney in the fridge too, to make it more interesting. The recipe has not really been simplified enough for the target market - first time cooks. More importantly, it is not idiot-proof. It does not explain the importance of sealing the chicken all over before putting it in the pre-prepared sauce - my method of frying the chicken with an onion is much safer. And it does not explain the importance of reducing the tomato and cooking through the meat thoroughly - the suggested simmering time for the chicken of 10 to 15 minutes is the bare minimum. So I feel it is a good try, but a few starter packets of spices and a link to a recipe would be a better bet. It does not justify the price premium.
