It can in no way be described as a plug but is in fact just a thin strip of some kind of 'material' about 2mm thick cut in the shape of a cone. I was very disappointed when I received these I had expected better for the enormous cost of this item so finding that I'd paid nearly £18 for five bits of what look like cardboard did not best please me. I did however decide to give them the benefit of the doubt and assumed that they would swell and become 'plug' shaped when put to use. Again I was to be disappointed. It just stayed flat and after soaking up an initial few drops of blood it allowed the rest to just drip out of my nostril either side of the strip. Eventually I had to remove it and revert to the old fashioned method of gripping the nose between finger and thumb. It had not changed shape and could still not be described as a plug in any way, shape or form. Either I got a faulty pack or these are a very very expensive con - BUYER BEWARE. I definitely will not be re-ordering these.

Very good, find they are a better shelf life prospect then other makes when it might be a year between the odd nose bleed. Actually on the point of ordering more for the just in case event.
