RAL Color Reader: Professional Color Measuring Device – handy and precise

Works for RAL standard colors. Readings were accurate with hand painted examples and with generic swatches of the same colors. App install and link with device was easy.

The RAL Color Reader is a small device (3" long x 1" cylinder) that charges via micro-USB (a bit of a downside in 2024, as USB-C would have been more convenient). Despite this, the device delivers consistent readings, making it a reasonable tool for color matching. I can't speak to it's accuracy since I don't have calibration targets to compare it against.One nice feature is the included cap, which contains a calibration chip. The app will occasionally prompt you to calibrate the device using this cap, ensuring accuracy. The device has twist connections at either end to securely retain the cap during and after use.The associated app, DataColor ColorReader, is basic but functional. The main screen allows you to take readings with the device and shows a visual representation of the color along with the three closest matches from the RAL brand color palettes and the difference (deltaE) from your reading. You can also get more detailed information, including RGB, CMYK, LAB, LCH, and HTML Hex values for the color.The app includes a history function and the ability to create and manage palettes of colors, adding to its utility.Overall, the RAL Color Reader is simple but works well. The app makes using the device straightforward and provides the necessary tools for working with color readings.
