Q: Is there a benefit to using 4 batteries in series over one single 48v battery

3 reasons why I purchased 4 batteries. Price was more reasonable, reviews that I read,the people that had used them in they're golf carts were very happy with them and last reason is I run my lights off of just 1 battery which gives me proper voltage. This was still a great decision for my battery replacement needs. Hope this helps you

I'm not sure, but if it takes a 12 volt deep cycle style batteries, I would think so.

Q: what voltmeter/ battery status indicator do you need for these on a golf cart?

Rather it be a golf cart or a VP system it is recommended to use a battery monitor specific to the type of battery being used. I have a Renogy empowered brand it will work with lithium ,AGM/Lead/ and LifePO4. This one wi also charge 12v @ 20amps, and 24v @ 10amps. Hope this helps. Regards John
