Typically most portable burners will turn on and off as it reaches the temperature it's been set on. None of the MegaChef Cooktops will stay on consistently.

Q: What is asafe sorface to place the burner on while in use?

A stone surface is best. Do not place on laminated surfaces.

It will adjust to the setting you set it on. If you have it all the up high and then turn it down, the coils will "turn off" until it reaches you lower heat setting. Hope that helps!
